The purpose of the study is to determine the level of ethical sensitivity and related factors of nurses working in the hospital settings. This descriptive study was conducted at a public hospital and a university hospital in Ankara, Turkey between April-July 2012. A total of 111 nurses participated in the study. The data were collected using a data collection tool consisting of two parts. The first part consisted of questions that determined the nurses' personal and socio-demographic characteristics. The second part comprised of "Byrd's Nurses Ethical Sensitivity Test". The data were evaluated by using frequency , percentage, t-test and one-way ANOVA. Of the 111 nurses, 39,7% had a work experience of 1-3 years, 51,4% was married and 38,7% did not have ethics education. Education levels of most of the nurses (62,2%) were bachelor's degree. The mean ethical sensitivity score of nurses was 21,12±2,85. "It was determined that ethical sensitivity of nurses was found to be higher in those that had ethics education, older age group, and had bachelor's degree than others (p<0,05)". The mean ethical sensitivity score of nurses was of medium level. It is concluded that ethical sensitivity was influenced by ethics education , age groups, and educational background. This study was conducted to determine and compare the effectiveness of nature sounds and relaxation exercises for reducing preoperative anxiety. A repeated measures randomized controlled trial design was used. We divided 159 preoperative patients into three groups: nature sounds (n = 53), relaxation exercises (n = 53), and control groups (n = 53). We evaluated anxiety using the visual analog scale and state anxiety inventory scores immediately before, immediately after, and 30 min after interventions in nature sounds and relaxation exercises groups, and silent rest in the control. We found no differences between the measurement values in the intervention groups, but we did observe a difference between the intervention and control groups. The two interventions were similarly effective in reducing preoperative anxiety. These simple and low-cost interventions can be used to reduce preoperative anxiety in surgical clinics.
Level of self-directed learning and academic achievement were higher in students who managed their time well.
Background: Percutaneous coronary interventions cause anxiety in patients, although these procedures are lifesaving. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of nature sounds and earplug interventions on the anxiety of patients after percutaneous coronary interventions. Methods: A randomized controlled trial design was used in this study. A total of 114 patients who were scheduled to undergo percutaneous coronary intervention were allocated to three groups in a randomized manner: two intervention groups (nature sound group, earplug group) and one control group. The Visual Analog Scale, State Anxiety Inventory and physiological parameters were used to measure anxiety. Data were collected from the patients at three time points: immediately before, immediately after and 30 minutes after the interventions. Results: The respiratory rates and the Visual Analog Scale and State Anxiety Inventory scores of patients in the nature sound and earplug groups immediately after and 30 minutes after the interventions were significantly lower than those of the control group ( p < 0.05). No differences were found when comparing respiratory rates, Visual Analog Scale scores and State Anxiety Inventory scores between patients in the nature sound group and patients in the earplug group ( p > 0.05). No changes were observed in the pulse and systolic/diastolic blood pressure values of patients in the control and intervention groups ( p > 0.05). Conclusions: It was determined that nature sounds and earplug interventions are effective in reducing the anxiety of patients following percutaneous coronary intervention.
Objective: The aim of this study was determine undergraduate nursing students' research activities and utilization. Method: A descriptive design was used in the study. This study conducted with undergraduate nursing students at the two universities in Turkey during the spring term of 2012. The population consisted of 216 participants. The data were collected through a questionnaire developed by the author based on literature. The Percentage, Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used to evaluate the collected data. Results: Approximately half of the students (49,5%) knew how to reach scientific publications but none of the students followed or read scientific publications. Only a few students (4,2%) had participated in a scientific research activity. It was found that 87,0% of the students did not utilize the research findings in clinical practice. Of 216 students, 34,4% did not know how to utilize the research findings. Conclusions: The majority of the students did not utilize the research findings in clinical practice. Insufficient knowledge about research utilization was the most prominent reason for not utilizing research findings by students. It is suggested that students should be encouraged and supported to utilize research findings and conduct research.
