Ce volume de Musurgia reproduit les communications faites par un groupe de chercheurs de l’équipe « Patrimoines et Langages Musicaux » de l’Université Paris-Sorbonne au colloque Tonality in Perspective à Londres en mars 2008. Cette introduction résume quelques-uns des principes théoriques qui sous-tendent le projet de recherche « Vecteurs harmoniques » comme théorie de la tonalité harmonique, mais rappelle, dans une brève analyse de Heidenröslein de Schubert sur un poème de Goethe, que les vecteurs harmoniques peuvent aussi constituer un outil d’analyse.
Le concept de « contenu » ( Inhalt ), qui a occupé la philosophie allemande pendant tout le Xix e siècle, notamment dans le débat sur la « musique absolue », forme un élément central et une préoccupation constante de la pensée de Schenker. Dans Der Geist der musikalischen Technik , Schenker décrit l’évolution de la musique en trois étapes : d’abord, l’explosion spontanée d’un plaisir accumulé ; puis une tentative d’imiter le langage et la pensée conceptuelle ; enfin, la libération du modèle linguistique et le développement d’une logique proprement musicale, fondée notamment sur la répétition. C’est la répétition qui fonde le motif, ce « mot-enson » ( Tonwort ) du langage musical. C’est elle qui dote la musique d’un contenu proprement musical, qui ne requiert ni référence mondaine, ni narration, ni programme littéraire.
La theorie de Tonal Pitch Space, contrairement a d'autres theories spatiales de la tonalite, est une theorie du systerne tonal plutOt que du discours tonal.l.espace decnt et les distances qu'on peut y mesurer sont precornpositionnelles ; les contraintes de type fonctionnel qui peuvent regir les deplacernents' dans l'espace ne sont pas reellernent conslderees parce qu'elles n'appartiennent pas au niveau du systerne immanent. D'autres theories au contraire, notamment les theories transformation nelles, pnvilegtent la description des mouvements et des transformations et n'utilisent I'espace tonal que comme visualisation des contraintes auxquelles ils sont soumis. Ces deux types de description doivent l!tre consideres comme complernentalres.La rheorie de la tonalite, comme la rheorie Iinguistique, pose de farron cruciale Ie probleme du rapport entre la langue et la parole, entre le systerne, l' "univers immanent" de la langue, et sa manifestation dans le discours. La question est de savoir si l'existence de la langue est une condition prealable a la production d' enonces -c'est Ie point de vue deductif -ou si, au contraire, la langue nait des enonces curnules -c'est le point de vue inductif Dans le cas qui nous occupe, la question devient celle-ci : Ie systerne tonal esr-il, en rant que tel, un prealable necessaire it la composition d'eeuvres ronales ? Ou, au contraire, ne se constitue-r-il que peu a peu a partir d'eeuvres tonales ? Quel que soit le point de vue adopre, il parait necessaire de penser que le systeme immanent et sa manifestation dans les oeuvres n'existent que dans un etat de presupposition reciproque : aucun des deux n'esr possible ni concevable sans l'autre (sur certe question, voir aussi Meeus, 1999).Mais certe pensee ressemble peut-etre aun aveu d'echec et toute la question apparalt comme un nceud gordien.Fred Lerdahl est conscient de l'opposition entre discours et systerne, lorsqu'il souligne qu' "il est necessaire de distinguer entre une hierarchie d'evenernents et une hierarchic tonale.
