Conversational maxim is a set of rule proposed by Grice (1975) that categorizes into four types, which are maxim of quantity, quality, relation, and manner. These rules are important to make an effective and clear conversation. By violating maxims, the participants of the conversation broke the rules of cooperative principle. The participants of the conversation seem to hide the real intended meanings and certain purposes which are conveyed by the speaker behind the utterance. This research uses theory by Grice’s Cooperative Principle and also support with theory by Cutting to analyze four types of conversational maxims violation. The method used to conduct this research is descriptive qualitative method. The amount of maxim violation of quantity is 6 (40%), that appears most frequently throughout the film. The violation of maxim of quality becomes the second violation that frequently found, that brings the total 4 violations (26,6%), also the third violation that occurs is violations of maxim of relation with 3 violations in total (20%). The main character violates the maxim of manners 2 times in totals (13,4%) more than any other violation, which is the least common infraction in the film.

This study investigates the utilization of Balinese cultural terms in the writing of English as a foreign language (EFL) students. It is intended to identify how the lexicons containing local values are used considering the translation procedures in the student’s mind. This qualitative research was conducted with ATLAS.ti software to visually present the connectedness of each lexicon with one another and to report the procedures of translation the students chose. When inserting the Balinese lexicons into their writing, the students involved in this study were still influenced by the concept of translation. With the translation procedures in mind, they applied transference, literal translation, functional equivalent, descriptive equivalent, and the combination of two and three procedures, namely, couplet and triplet, to be able to communicate their ideas involving the Balinese lexicons in their English writing. This study sheds some light on the application of translation procedures when students use local language terms in their foreign language writing. The students borrowed the local lexicons and gave an additional explanation to clarify their values. This finding indicates that having the concept of translation, and particularly the procedures of translation, can assist EFL students in broadening their knowledge of the existence of Balinese cultural terms as well as utilizing them by applying translation procedures to clarify the meaning of the terms in their writing to create communicative writing.

This study concerns with code-switching in Daniel Mananta’s utterance. This study aims to answer the research problems, which are: (1) to classify the types of code switching found in Daniel Mananta’s utterance and (2) and to analyze the function of code switching. Descriptive qualitative method was applied to identify the data. Code-switching was described according to a theory proposed by Poplack (1980) to classify the types of code-switching and the theory by Apple& Muysken (1987) to describe the function of code switching found in Daniel Mananta’s utterance. The result of this study shows that all types of code switching and six function of code-switching were found. First, the three types of code-switching were found, namely tag switching, intra-sentential switching, and inter-sentential switching, in which the most dominant switching is intra-sentential switching. It occurs because Daniel Mananta looks more comfortable when using words, clauses, and phrases in one sentence to convey motivational messages.
