Self-assessment as one of authentic assessments has been currently implemented in EFL teaching pedagogy as to give more opportunity to the students to reflect on their own learning and progress. This study aims at investigating the effect of selfassessment on students' independence and writing competence. In the present study, two groups of junior secondary school students in Indonesia were investigated in their learning of English due to the use of self-assessment towards their independence and writing competence of three genre texts. The research used a post-test only control group design in which one group was given an experimental treatment using self-assessment, while the other received a conventional assessment utilizing teacher's assessment. There were two types of instruments used, questionnaire of students' independence and writing competence test which underwent validity and reliability testing beforehand. The data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA and MANOVA. Before the inferential statistics analyses were conducted, the data were pre-requisitely tested in terms of normality, homogeneity, and multi co-linearity. The results prove that self-assessment has an effect on the students' independence and writing competence. Thus, teachers are recommended to promote the use of self-assessment to improve the students' independence and writing competence.
Abstract. This paper reports the theoretical perspectives underlying the development of local culture-based picture storybooks for teaching English for young learners. It is a library research which derives from three main sources, journal articles, reference books, and internet articles. Local culture-based picture storybooks are kinds of printed materials which basically contain stories adapted from local culture stories accompanied with visualization in the forms of pictures telling the characters and the settings to help young learners easily understand the stories. They are developed considering the good criteria of storybooks [1,2]. The benefits of its development are (1) to improve reading skill of young learners, (2) to build children English literacy through listening to the story read by the teachers and communicating interactively with them through dialogic reading, (3) create a fun learning atmosphere which enhances motivation and participation to take part in understanding and using the language, and (4) to preserve local culture. The books are developed using a combination of model [3,4] which has 5 main steps namely need analysis, developing product, expert validation, and quality assessment by experts and users (teachers), and main product revision.
Integrating Technology in the learning process is very important in today’s digital era so that educators do not only have a component of content and pedagogical knowledge but also be have to be supported by the ability to integrate both components with technology. The purpose of this study was to analyze the competence of Technology, Pedagogy, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) of Education technology alumni in supporting their profession to become professional teachers. The method applied in this study was a Mixed method, using data from alumni who graduated in 2016-2017 through questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The results showed that the variables in TPACK, content knowledge variable and pedagogy content knowledge variable had a high average compared to other variables, namely 73.50 and 73.10. This indicated that from the pedagogic and content side, Education Technology alumni had a good mastery of content and pedagogical knowledge. However, being viewed from the average score in applying technology, their competence was still low. The Technology Pedagogy Knowledge variable achieved 48.30, while the TPACK variable reached 52.40. These results implies that Education Technology alumni still need to improve their TPACK competence in order to become a professional teacher in the era of industrial revolution 4.0.
Reading is the basic literacy as the foundation for intellectual development. Researchers found that Indonesian students have low reading competence. This is due to the fact that they do not possess a good reading habit. Hence, the study aimed at investigating the effect of local culture-based storybooks, one of which is a fable on students' reading competence and analyzing the effect size of the treatment. It was an experimental research administering post-test only control group design. The population was sixth grade students of elementary schools in Buleleng Regency, Bali. The samples were determined using intact group cluster random sampling technique of 34 students from two elementary schools. Experimental group was treated by using storybook, whereas control group was taught by using text-based story. The data were collected through post-test. The obtained data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially using t-test. Cohen's d was administered to check the effect size. The result proves that there was a significant effect of local culture-based storybook on students' reading competence, while Cohen's d shows that the effect size was medium. Thus, teachers are recommended to regularly use stories for improving reading competence.
