This study aimed at finding the answer to the question: How does the culture view of the North Bali Community look as seen from the lexicons used in their ngidih marriage tradition?. Conducted in North Bali, this study was designed based on descriptive qualitative research with an ethnolinguistic perspective. The results showed that the whole ritual steps of the ngidih marriage consist of ngluku, mesedek, ngidih, mebiakala, natab kesurya, melukat pebersihan, malehpeh , natab sayut, and ngaturang piuning. Sixty-two lexicons were found in this study. Among them, 11 were categorized into nouns, 49 as verbs of action, and two as adjectives. Spreading over the whole steps of the marriage, all of the lexicons reflect the uniqueness of the community's cultural meanings, that is, the bond of the bridegroom and bride in a marriage is not only a matter of physical and spiritual union but it is also a binding with their cultural attachment, which include the rule of bridegroom's family, clan, traditional community, local government, and the marriage. The marriage is viewed to be complete one only if it has passed sets of rituals which are witnessed by three parties; bhuta saksi (evil spirits witness), manusia saksi (human beings witness), and dewa saksi (God witness) based on Bali Hindu religion.

Local culture is a crucial aspect in human life. Local culture relates to the way of human life such as thinking, feeling, and acting. It is undeniable that local culture could be used in the academic context as the medium in learning English. By using local culture, students will be able to empower their ability in thinking, speaking, and writing. Therefore, the teachers are required to design the learning process by providing local culture contents or materials that the students are familiar with. This research aimed to analyse whether Junior High School's teachers have implemented three ways in a local culture based on teaching English which was proposed by Goldberg and to find out whether the students feel more enthusiastic in learning by using local culture content. Besides that, this study was to investigate and measure the influence of local culture on students’ skills before and after using local culture contents in learning English. The data of research were collected from two Junior High Schools in Timika-Papua, Indonesia. They were SMP N 2 and SMP N 8. The method of this research was both quantitative and qualitative. In gaining the data, the researcher distributed the questionnaire to 107 students and interviewed two teachers and two students. After that, the researcher collected the data, identified, and analysed it by using SPSS 26.0. The findings revealed that Papuan English teacher have used local culture contents in providing the English materials for the students. On the other hand, students’ skills can be improved to be better by using local culture contents in learning English.

The Covid-19 pandemic forces teachers to apply distance learning through online. In online learning, technology is only a tool, and its success is influenced by how that technology is used. This indicates that pedagogical knowledge is the foundation that makes online learning successful. Therefore, this paper aims to explain strategies for effective and meaningful online learning, especially in English as a foreign language (EFL) context, which promotes local culture. This paper is written based on a systematic literature review and best practices on implementing online learning in the Covid-19 pandemic. It starts with the concept of effective and meaningful learning. Then, it specifically discusses the concepts of teaching EFL, what to learn in EFL, and the interconnection of language and culture in the EFL context. Finally, it provides a method of best practices to conduct online learning for teaching EFL during the Covid-19 pandemic.
