Introduction. Human identification is vital not only in legal medicine but also in criminal inquiries and identification. Cheiloscopy is the study of lip prints which are unique, individual, and heritable that is used for personal identification purposes in forensic odontology. Objective. The aim of this study is to identify the possibility of the child to inherit the lip print patterns from their parents and also to describe the lip print patterns in children and their parents among the Deutero-Malay population. Method. The descriptive research used lip samples of 90 individuals including father, mother, and a child who are biologically related and their age ranges from 12 to 60 years old. The samples chosen are from the Deutero-Malay ethnic in Indonesia at least for the past two generation who obeys all the exclusion criteria of this research. Purposive nonrandom sampling method was used to collect samples by photography technique using a digital camera, and the data obtained were then analysed using Adobe Photoshop CS3 software. Grooves and wrinkles of primary quadrants one, three, six, and seven of lips were studied according to Suzuki and Tsuchihashi’s classification in 1971. Result. In the present study, it is found that Type I′ (30.28%) is the most dominant lip print pattern and Type I (1.39%) is the least dominant among the Deutero-Malay population. Besides, this study has shown that the similarity of lip print pattern between mother and the child (57.89%) is greater compared to the father and the child (42.22%). Conclusion. Based on this, we can conclude that lip print can be inherited and dissimilar for every population of race; likewise, the Deutero-Malay population has the Type I′ as the most dominant lip print pattern.
Introduction: Age estimation has an important role in the process of human identification and needs to be performed in an efficient, fast, and accurate ways. Age estimation based on the pulp cavity volume of canines was referring to the theory stated that the apposition of secondary dentine during human life could be determined as an age indicator. This study was aimed to estimate the human age based on the pulp volume of canines for chronological estimation. Methods: Forty-one canine teeth from Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) 3D image sample from Dental Hospital of the Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran segmented into dental pulp and enamel were prepared for measurement of pulp volume using the ITK SNAP volumetric software. Descriptive analysis of pulp volume and regression equations were generated from regression analysis of pulp volume and tested for age estimation. Result: Dentine thickness was found to be increased from adolescence age range until adulthood age range. Logarithmic regression between pulp volume was statistically significant (p < 0,001). The coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.753 with a standard deviation of 8.421. Mathematics model for estimating age was: Age = 79.523 – (18.194 x ln(Pulp Volume)). The pulp cavity and dentine thickness were decreasing along the age. The same equation was also used in the same sample. There were several differences between chronological age and estimated age approximately 8.4 years following the regression result of R2 (75.3%). The rest of the sample (24.7%) have a big difference, and this could be affected by modifying variables such as occlusal force and human error measurement procedures. Conclusion: The human age can be estimated by the pulp volume of canines. Keywords: Age estimation, pulp volume, canine, ITK-SNAP, CBCT.
Cigarette smoking can cause taste receptors to increase the taste threshold value. Consequently, the consumption of sugar and salt will not be controlled, therefore causing systemic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Nicotine and tobacco in cigarettes can stimulate MMP-9 which plays vital physiological roles in normal tissue growth and repair processes. This study aimed to find the correlation between taste threshold sensitivity and MMP-9, salivary secretion, blood pressure, and blood glucose levels in smoking and nonsmoking women. This was a cross-sectional study consisting of young adult women aged 18–24 years. Subjects were divided into two groups: the nonsmoking and smoking groups. In the combined data of both groups, the sweet taste threshold was correlated with age (r = 0.308, p=0.008), blood glucose levels (r = 0.238, p=0.043), and MMP-9 (r = –0.297, p=0.011). The salt taste threshold was only correlated with systolic blood pressure in the smoking (r = 0.440, p=0.032) and combined data groups (r = 0.260, p=0.026). By using partial correlation, it was shown that the relationship between the salt taste threshold and systolic blood pressure was influenced by smoking habits. The sweet taste threshold in women was found to correlate with age, blood glucose levels, and MMP-9 levels. On the other hand, there was a significant relationship between the salt taste threshold in women with systolic blood pressure, which was the only correlation analyzed in sthis study that was found to be influenced by smoking. However, both sweet and salt taste thresholds were not statistically correlated with salivary secretion.
Teeth esthetics is important for someone. One thing influence teeth estheticsis is colour. Dental bleaching using hydrogen peroxide 40% and strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) is conservative alternative to restore the esthetics of either stained teeth. This study was an experimental laboratory by comparing control group with two treatment groups were teeth smeared hydrogen peroxide 40% or soaked in strawberry. This study was done in Histology Laboratory Faculty of Medicine and Chemical Laboratory Universitas Padjadjaran, and ITMKG Laboratory Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran period August 2012-May 2013. Each group used nine permanent premolars, which will be measured email thickness microscopically, calcium levels using spectrophotometer, and compressive stregth using universal testing machine. The statistical test used for thickness measurement results email was the t-test, for measurement of calcium levels using Wilcoxon test and Mann Whitney while for tooth strength measurements were tested using Kruskal Wallis and Post Hoc Mann Whitney. The results ...
