Ikan Belanak memiliki keunikan pada bibir bagian atas lebih tebal daripada bagian bawah, namun antara ikan jantan dan betina masih sulit dibedakan secara morfologinya. Ikan belanak tidak menunjukkan adanya dimorfisme seksual secara jelas, sehingga identifikasi jenis kelamin perlu dilakukan penelitian dengan teknik morfometrik yang telah banyak dibuktikan mampu mengidentifikasi perbedaan jantan dan betina pada populasi ikan. Berdasarkan uraian di atas dapat dirumuskan permasalahan yang akan dikaji dalam penelitian ini yaitu: (1) Dapatkah karakter morfologi digunakan sebagai dasar pembeda jenis kelamin ikan belanak (Mugil cephalus dan Valamugil seheli). (2) Karakter morfologi manakah yang dapat digunakan untuk membedakan ikan jantan dan betina. Berdasarkan permasalahan tersebut, maka tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk: (1) Mengetahui perbedaan jenis kelamin ikan belanak (Mugil cephalus dan Valamugil seheli) berdasarkan performa, truss morfometrics, morfometrik standard dan meristik. (2) Mengetahui karakter morfologi yang dapat digunakan untuk membedakan jenis kelamin ikan belanak (Mugil cephalus dan Valamugil seheli) jantan dan betina. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode survei, dan sampel diambil dengan teknik purposive random sampling yaitu sampel dipilih secara khusus sesuai dengan tujuan penelitian. Variabel yang diamati yaitu peforma morfologi, morfometrik standar, meristik dan truss morphometrics. Data hasil pengamatan performa morfologi dan meristik dianalisis secara deskriptif. Data pengukuran morfometrik dan truss morphometrics dianalisis dengan menggunakan uji ‘t’. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa ikan belanak yang di perdagangkan di TPI Tegal Kamulyan Cilacap Jawa Tengah terdapat dua spesies yakni, Mugil cephalus dan Valamugil seheli. Karakter morfologi dapat mengidentifikasi jenis kelamin ikan belanak (Mugil cephalus dan Valamugil seheli).
