Patients with OSA have elevated serum levels of hs-CRP, a marker for inflammation and an independent risk predictor for cardiovascular morbidity. The severity of OSA is responsible for the elevation of hs-CRP.
Postintubation Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is a rare complication. Acquired TEF most commonly occurred following prolonged mechanical ventilation with an endotracheal or tracheostomy tube, cuff-related tracheal injury, post-intubation injury. We present a case of both tracheomegaly and tracheosephagial fistula following mechanical ventilation for 15 days, in the light of the literature.
A trend of reduced TB burden began in Turkey in 1997. As a result of the implementation of HTP beginning in 2003, the target treatment success and DOTS application rates were achieved and progress has continued even in the face of the recent worldwide economic crisis.
Palliative care (PC) is the comprehensive integrated care of patients and their families who are facing problems associated with a life-threatening illness. In 2014, the World Health Assembly Resolution on Palliative Care called for all countries to incorporate palliative care provision into their healthcare systems. Unfortunately, the desired outcomes have not been obtained yet, and there is still a substantial unmet need for palliative care for chronic life-limiting health problems in most parts of the world. Turkey is a large peninsula situated between the continents of Europe and Asia. It is a modern, secular and unitary republic that bridges different religions and cultures. The population of the country is increasing similarly to world statistics, with 4.3% of people 65 years or older in 1990, 5.7% in 2000 and 8.3% in 2016 (Republic of Turkey Ministry of Health, 2017). Along with the ageing of the population, the incidences of cancer and other non-communicable chronic diseases are also increasing at a rapid rate. Cancer was reported to be the cause of 20% of death after cardiovascular diseases in Turkey. Therefore, the need for palliative care for cancer and other chronic life-limiting diseases is increasing in the same manner. The awareness of palliative care has started in the 1990s and disseminated very slowly through the years in Turkey. It gained acceleration with the Transformation Programme in Health which
Bronchiectasis is a sequel to permanent chronic airway inflammation and defined as ‘irreversible bronchial dilatation’. It is increasingly being recognized with the wider availability of high-resolution computed tomography. Children with noncystic fibrosis can be seen with improvement in bronchiectasis even resolution, as opposed to adults. We report a case of reversible bronchial dilatation in an adult as evidenced by high-resolution computed tomography, which demonstrates that, although quite rare in adults, spontaneous resolution may occur.
Objective: To evaluate the approaches of active-smoker health care workers to the law on "Prevention and Control of Hazards of Tobacco Products", to determine behavioral changes in smoking and the factors associated with these changes after the law was enacted.
Methods:The population of the study consisted of 1096 health care workers who were active smokers and worked at state hospitals and the 112 emergency service in Çorum. Questionnaire forms were delivered by hand to the participants. The survey was designed with 32 closed-ended questions associated with demographic findings, smoking habits, and the smoking ban. Data were obtained through questionnaires filled out by participants. Statistical Package SPSS 16.0 was used for the analysis.
Results:The response rate was 47.7%. Eighty-five percent of the participants had a positive opinion on the law. In the sociodemographic data, only a higher number of working years in health care was found to be associated with the negative opinion on the ban. As the number of years smoked, pack-years, and addiction level increased, the rate of a positive approach toward the law decreased. Participants who were ashamed of smoking outdoors, who had tried to quit, and who did not smoke in the same environment with children expressed more positive opinions.
Conclusion:Approaches of active smoker health care workers to the smoking ban is similar to society. Health professionals whose role in the fight against tobacco is started by "the responsibility of being a role model" should be taken to smoking control programs as a priority and with a holistic approach.
