Public speaking in English is a needed skill for leaders and staffs in any offices and companies in Indonesia. In this globalization era, skill to communicate effectively and efficiently in English during a meeting or a teleconference with foreigners is needed, such as for company product promotion, or during building cooperation. Therefore, public speaking course is occupied by employees since they have an important role for the company development. Since the needs of this skill is high, universities in Indonesia have started providing course of Public Speaking in English. One of them is English Department in Politeknik Negeri Padang. In teaching public speaking, the teacher must teach them to overcome their fear, show their confident, perform perfectly, and used good English. Unfortunately, performing in their reguler class, infront of their classmates and lecturers did not build any of them. An action was taken by asking the students to upload their performance in their personal instagram application. Instagram was chosen since the application provides a variety of video that get shared to instagram daily. View, comment, and like from the viewers would be the important part of building the character of the students to be like a professional public speaker. From several times presenting their public speaking activities in instagram, Categories 'state in purpose' 'organize the content', and 'summarize the main idea' are in level 5 (high) which means highest improvement. Category 'speak clearly with appropriate vocabulary and information', 'uses tone, speed, and volume as tool', and 'appears comfortable with audiences' in level 4 which is between high and average. Meanwhile, it still can be seen that students need more on English knowledge such their numbers of vocabularies and English structure. In conclusion, instagram application can be one of the media for improving students' public speaking skill especially in building the character of a public speaker.
Based on the fact, there are often standard inequalities and curriculum needs made, provided, and used for D3 and D4 study programs. For example, the Electrical Series courses as basic skills courses for student, even each program lectured by the same person, the understanding of each study program’s students on this subject is very different. The initial assumption, this occurs because misunderstanding of each education level with the differences need between vocation and majors courses. So the material given to D3 and D4 is unbalanced. The initial assumption was that the lecturer teams of each study program were too deco-defective towards the category of applied electrical engineering graduation that had to work in the industry, and electrical engineering education which had to become a teacher. For instance, electrical circuit subjects, this course is a basic knowledge in electrical engineering, so it must be shared and delivered to students is the same scientific material. Therefore, this research is very important to be carried out to unite the perceptions and perspectives of the electrical engineering department - UNP along with the lecturer council for the ideal curriculum for a department of educational institutions with the origin of formation such as UNP.
Writing is a complex process that allows students to explore thoughts and ideas and make them visible and concrete. Teaching writing is a process of giving skills to students on how to communicate and express their thought, feelings, and opinions in a written language. Writing skill is a skill rarely taught to learners either at SMP or SMA level since it is considered difficult, not tested in semester or final examination, teacher is more often preoccupied with explaining the parts (generic structure) of a text than by applying it in a student's writing, and learning writing skills is very time consuming in the process and also in providing feedback. This article is derived from the study conducted on finding the effect of collaborative writing strategy and writing interest toward students' writing ability of descriptive text at tenth grade of SMA INS Kayutanam. The aim of the research was finding out whether or not collaborative writing strategy could give a better result of students' achievement in writing descriptive text. This was a quasi experimental study taking 44 students as the participant. The data were collected by giving writing test. The students were asked to a write a descriptive text based on the picture given. The result of the test shows that the students had better achievement in writing descriptive text when they were taught by using collaborative writing strategy.
Self efficacy is someone's belief of his capability to complete a task or to perform something. Zimmerman and Martinez-Pons, as cited in Kitikanan and Sasimonton (2017: 4) say, "Students with high self-efficacy tend to learn and achieve more than those with low ones". In other words, when someone has high self-efficacy, his/her effort to do writing will be better and it is assumed that their writing achievement will be better as well. On the contrary, students with low self-efficacy often have lower score of writing than the students with high self-efficacy. Then, many techniques work well for only students with high self-efficacy. This study was designed to see whether or not Roundtable technique is effective to be used to teach writing descriptive text for the students with low self-efficacy. The research was done at Al-Azhar Islamic Junior High School 32 Padang. This was an experimental research design with 51 students in the population. The students were spread in three classes which consisted of 17 students in each class. Two classes were chosen as the sample by using cluster random sampling technique. One class was the experiment class, and the other was as control class. Students' self-efficacy was tested by using questionnaires. Then, they were grouped into students with high and low self-efficacy. After that they were given treatment. The data were then collected after the treatment was given by administering writing test. The students' writing achievement scores were analyzed by using t-test formula and the level of significance used was 0.05 (5 %). After being calculated, the value of t-observed was 2.975, whereas the t-table was 2.306. Consequently, Roundtable technique was effective to be used to teach the students with low self-efficacy to write descriptive text at Al-Azhar Islamic Junior High School 32 Padang.
This research was designed to measure the level of anxiety faced by the students and its effect on students' performance, and the factors causing the anxiety. This study is a descriptive research. The sample of this study was the students of English Department who took speech subject at STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat academic year 2018/2019. The participants of the research were 12 (25%) out of 50 students. The researcher used three instruments in collecting the data; speaking test, questionnaire, and interview. The speaking test was a speech test and the students' performance was scored by using a scoring rubric. The questionnaire was adapted from Horwitz et al. (1986) and the scores from the Likert scale were then tabulated to identify students' level of anxiety. Last, interview was administered to find out the internal and external factors causing the anxiety. The result shows that the students, as a whole, have medium level of anxiety in the apprehension of communication, low in the evaluation of negative fear, and also low in the test of anxiety. The researcher found out that the students with low level of anxiety in those three types of anxiety performed well in the speech test. Thus, it implies that anxiety affects students' performance. From the interview, it can be concluded that the students' anxiety derived mostly from the internal factors; fear of being laughed at or their unconfidence.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
