Several markers have been studied to diagnose PROM but there is still limitation with a gold standard test for the diagnosis [1]. Objective: To evaluate and compare the accuracy of urea, creatinine and hCG in vaginal fluid washing for diagnosis of PROM and to determine cut off levels. Type of the study: Prospective study performed on pregnant women in their third trimester who are coming to Kasr El Ainy maternity outpatient clinic with history of fluid leakage. Patients and methods: 150 patients between 26 -40 weeks were included in the study. Group I included 50 patients with clinically confirmed ROM, group II included 50 with unconfirmed ROM and 50 controls with no complaints (group III). All patients were subjected to speculum examination for amniotic fluid pooling, nitrazine paper test, vaginal fluid washing for measurement of creatinine, urea and β-hCG, and ultrasound examination. The results were compared as regards the 3 study groups. Results: There was no statistically significant difference among the 3 study groups as regards age, parity BMI, nor gestational age. There was a statistically significant difference in creatinine level among confirmed, suspected and control groups. Urea levels showed also a statistically significant difference among the three groups. There was a positive correlation between vaginal creatinine and urea and gestational age in the 3 groups (r = 0.43, and 0.51 respectively). There was a statistically significant difference between vaginal fluid wash urea and creatinine levels and β-hCG as sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values and accuracy for urea and creatinine were all 100% and for qualitative β-hCG 83%, 100%, 100%, 85.6%, and 91% respectively. Conclusion
Obesity is associated with a number of serious medical complications, which are often referred to as the “insulin resistance syndrome”. The aim of the present study was performed to investigate the possible interaction between a conventional drug used for management of cholesterol and traditional herbal remedies on the obesity. This was carried through out: through estimation of blood test; Estimation of serum tests; Determination of oxidative stress biomarkers and the antioxidant enzymes activities in the liver were assayed; Histopathological examination of the liver and kidney of adult male albino rats were done. In the present study, the serum levels of the total protein and albumin in the obesity group (7.1± 0.2) and (4.78 ± 0.19); respectively were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) more than those of the control group (6.5±0.1) and (3.95± 0.1).The administration of (fennel group) revealed significant (P<0.05) decrease in the serum levels of the albumin and total protein (4.38± 0.1) and (6.65± 0.2); respectively as compared to the obesity group (4.78 ± 0.19) and (7.1± 0.2(. The total cholesterol of the group(5) (fennel and ator) after two weeks from a high fat diet than treatment with fennel and Ator through six weeks equal 142.86±5.9, 100.4±8.68, 93.29±5.99, 87.1±11.28, 80.4±21.55, 78.1±6.7 and 77.1±6.87; respectively. The present study showed a significant (P<0.05) increase in the activities of ALT, AST and ALP in the obesity group which recorded as (60.5±11.45), (57.25±6.3) and (845.0±49.47); respectively as compared to the control group (28.25±1.7), (38.5±3.87) and (537.0±41.5); respectively. The fennel group caused significant decrease in the activities of these enzymes (41.0± 2.9), (42.25+3.2) and (717.75+48.6); respectively compared to the obesity group. Ator group showed a significant decrease in the activities of these enzymes (40.0±2.16), (42.5±3.1) and (679.25±41.16); respectively compared as obesity group. The activity of AlT, AST and ALP in the fennel and ator group (32.75±2.5), (40.5±2.38) and (601.25±17.5); respectively were near to the control group.
Colorectal cancer is a disease of the elderly, and affects the younger population with an incidence of 2 to 6%.An increasing number of young colorectal carcinoma patients attending at Mansoura University Hospital, Mansoura, Egypt, was noted. This report represents our data of the last 5 years, and compares these results with those of other countries and those previously reported from Egypt.Data were collected retrospectively from the patient records of 400 consecutive patients who had colorectal cancer from January 1994 to March 1999 at Mansoura University Hospital. The maximum incidence was seen in the 5th and 6th decades (mean age was 45 years). A total of 29% of patients were younger than 30 years of age and 26% of them above the age of 60 years. The rectum was the most common site involved (68% of patients), followed by the sigmoid (colon/rectal ratio was 4 : 8.5). Two percent of cases were Dukes A Stage, 26% Dukes B, 31% Dukes C, and 41% Dukes D. The percentage of patients who underwent potentially curative resection was 66% (263 patients).Colorectal carcinoma in Egypt shares the epidemiological characteristics of developing countries which are higher incidence in younger patients and carcinoma of the rectum predominates
Bivalves are used as bioindicators of heavy metals pollution because they are known to concentrate these elements, providing a time integrated indication of environmental contamination. Trace metals can reach high concentrations in sediments and also in aquatic organisms by bioaccumulation through the food chain. Six heavy metals (Hg, Zn, Pb, Fe, Mg and Cu) were collected and investigated from Abu Hummus, El Behara. The concentration of Hg was high in winter as 2.3µg/g in sediment. The Zn concentration was high in summer in sediment as 8.1µg/g. The Pb concentration was high in winter in water as 3.3µg/l. The concentration of Fe in sediment was high in summer as 492 µg/g. The concentration of Mg was high in sediment as 408µg/g. The concentration of Cu was high in summer in sediment as 301µg/g. The mean concentrations of Fe in the present study are within the permissible limits of law 48/1982 (<1 mg/l) and the guideline of (WHO, 1993) which is <1 mg/l. The mean concentration level of copper is within the permissible limits of law 48/1982 (<1.0 mg/l). The mean levels of the heavy metals (Hg, Zn, Pb, Fe, Mg and Cu) detected in the present study in the water stream are less than the permissible limits recommended by (USEPA, 2005). In the present study there is a significance between all seasons in the protein content in the soft tissue of Spathopsisrubensas the mean concentration level in Spring was reported as 102.83mg/g which is higher then that of autumn 100.5mg/g, summer 93.33 mg/g and winter 80.50 mg/g. In the present study the mean activity level of GPx in spring was higher than the other seasons such as spring 31.33u/g ˃ summer 28.33 u/g ˃Autumn 26.67 u/g ˃ winter 20.50u/g. The mean activity level of SOD in summer was higher than the other seasons such as summer 38.83 u/g ˃ spring 33.33 U /g ˃Autumn 28.83U/g ˃ winter 22.83U/g. The mean activity level of CAT in spring was higher than the other seasons such as spring 25.67u/g ˃ summer and autumn19.83u/g ˃ winter 15.17u/g. The mean activity level of MDA in winter was 30.50 U/g ˃ summer 22.50U/g ˃ autumn 18.0 U/g ˃ spring 16.83U/g. In the present study it was found that the mean activity level of MDA increased in winter at the same time the mean activity level of CAT, SOD and GPx were decreased in winter. Negative correlation was reported between CAT and Hg in winter as r=-0.88*. A positive correlation coefficient in winter was found between SOD activity level and CAT activity level as r=0.838*.
