Nine genetically diverse sunflower promising lines in their economic trait were crossed using line by tester mating design in 2018 spring season, to estimate per se performance, combining ability, heterosis, gene action and heritability for earliness, yield and its attributes traits. The parents involved four sunflower CMS lines namely L1 (A3), L2 (A5), L3 (A9) and L4 (A13) (called hereafter "Lines" (as female parents) and five sunflower genotypes T1 (RF9), T2 (RF10), T3 (RF11), T4 (RF14) and T5 (RF1) as male parents (called hereafter "Tester"). In 2018 and 2019 summer season, the nine parents along with their 20 F 1 s seeds were evaluated at Shandaweel Agricultural Research Station, ARC, Sohag Governorate, Egypt using a randomized complete blocks design with three replications. Mean squares due to parents (P), crosses (C), CMS lines (L), RF testers (T), P vs C and L x T were significant for all studied traits. A larger magnitude of non-additive gene action than additive was revealed by greater ratios (GCA/ SCA) than unity for all studied traits (except for days to 50% flowering). A5 and A13 of CMS lines and RF11 and RF14 of RF lines proved to be the best general combiners for seed weight plant -1 and one or more of its attributes traits. Moreover, the best cross combinations A13 x RF11, A13 x RF1 and A5 x RF9 performed better than other developed hybrids in view of seed weight plant -1 and one or more of its attributes, hence these F1 hybrids could further be used on commercial exploitation. M.T.: Response of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) crop and broad-leaved weeds to different water requirements and weed management in sandy soil.Water scarcity is a major cause of crops yield reduction in many parts of the world. So, a more rational use of irrigation water should be adapted and deficit irrigation principles should be accepted with a certain level of reduction in yield level. To study the efficiency of four water requirements (100% whole season, 75% whole season, 50% whole season and 100% whole season while 50% at grain-filling stage) and five weed-control treatments (three postemergence herbicides i.e., metosulam, tribenuron-methyl, and bromoxynil), hand weeding and unweeded check, and their interactive effects, two field experiments on wheat crop were conducted in two successive seasons at the agricultural experimental station of the National Research Centre, Nubaria, Egypt. Bromoxynil, tribenuron-methyl came in the first order for controlling total broad-leaved weeds. Application of 100% water requirement recorded the highest values compared to all other irrigation water treatments in term of flag-leaf area, chlorophyll content, plant height, number of spike/m 2 , spike weight, grains number/spike, weight of 1,000 grains, yield and yield attributes of wheat. Metosulam followed by bromoxynil, tribenuron-methyl and hand-weeding treatments gave higher values of grain yield/ha. The highest grain yield, protein and carbohydrates percentages of wheat grains were obtained from addition of 100% water requirement with metosulam treatment was used followed by 75% of water requirement combined with metosulam treatment without significant difference among these treatments.

Twenty-one hybrids of sunflower were produced by crossing 7 introduced cytoplasmic male sterile lines (CMS-lines) with 3 restorer lines (RF-lines) using line × tester mating design. The twenty-one hybrids, three restorers, seven maintainer lines (B-lines) were evaluated. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design of three replications. Mean squares due to genotypes, parents (P), crosses (C), lines (L), testers (T), P vs. C, for stearic acid and line × tester for palmitic acid. The inbred lines and their F1 hybrids differed significantly in their mean values of the traits under study. The variances due to specific combining ability (SCA) were higher than general combining ability (GCA) variances for all the studied traits, showing non-additive type of gene action controlling the traits. Non-additive type of gene action can be utilized for varietal improvement through heterosis breeding. Heterosis values for seed yield plant−1 were positive and highly significant relative to both the parental mean (17.68–72.38%) and the better parent (−2.86–56.842%). Significantly and negative heterosis was recorded in the case of linoleic acid relative to the parental mean (−81.24 to −38.02%) and better parent (−66.24–22.87%). With oleic acid, the heterotic effect ranged from −14.18 to 39.59% (parental mean) and from −15.06 to 38.72% (better parent). Therefore, these results are valuable for the improvement of quantitative as well as qualitative traits in sunflower breeding material to fulfill the edible oil requirements.

Background and Objective: Biological fertilization in the development of agriculture became one new strategy in the increased production of field crops to decrease the costs of production input and environmental pollution. This study focused on the influence of biochar fertilization on the productivity of faba bean varieties under sandy soils. Materials and Methods: Appreciation of the yield and its components, in addition to measurement of grain protein content as well as carbohydrates (%) of faba bean. Results: The data obtained indicated that the biochar amendment affects plant production at different rates, where the best yield obtained is 90 kg fedG 1 . The grain yield increase is significant for the varietyʼs types where, Mariout-2, followed by Nubaria-3 followed by Giza-716 for the addition of 90 kg fedG 1 of biochar as referenced by the non-conditioning treatment. Likewise, the protein content was highest in the Mariout-2 variety, followed by Nubaria-3 variety and Giza-716 variety for the addition. This improvement may be regarded to the impact of biochar on the physic-chemical characteristics for the soils, in addition to the biological characteristics. Furthermore, the biochar itself add nutrient to the soil after decomposition. The best improvement happens by the long-term cropping for a long period could be reached up to years. Conclusion:The conclusion that plant growth was better at a high rate (90 kg fedG 1 ) but the economy of this rate may be questioned, under the condition of the study. However, the validation for different soils may vary with different rates, which needs more research. Also, it is recommended to use Mariout-2 cultivars for their high production under these conditions.
