In preparation for the introduction of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, we investigated awareness and knowledge of HPV/HPV vaccine and potential acceptability to HPV vaccine among mothers with a teenage daughter in Weihai, Shandong, China. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2013 with a sample of 1850 mothers who had a daughter (aged 9–17 years) attending primary, junior and senior high schools. In the final sample (N = 1578, response rate 85.30%), awareness of HPV was reported by 305 (19.32%) mothers. Awareness varied significantly by daughter’s age (P<0.01), mother’s education level (P<0.01), mother’s occupation (P<0.01), household income (P<0.01) and residence type (P<0.01). Knowledge about HPV/HPV vaccine was poor with a mean total score of 3.56 (SD = 2.40) out of a possible score of 13. Mothers with a higher education level reported higher levels of knowledge (P = 0.02). Slightly more than one-fourth (26.49%) of mothers expressed their potential acceptability of HPV vaccine for their daughters. Acceptability increased along with increased daughters’ age (P<0.01), household income (P<0.01) and knowledge level (P<0.01). House wives and unemployed mothers had the highest acceptability (P<0.01). The most common reasons for not accepting HPV vaccination were “My daughter is too young to have risk of cervical cancer (30.95%)”, “The vaccine has not been widely used, and the decision will be made after it is widely used (24.91%)”, “Worry about the safety of the vaccine (22.85%)”. Awareness and knowledge of HPV/HPV vaccines are poor and HPV vaccine acceptability is low among these Chinese mothers. These results may help inform appropriate health education programs in this population.

BackgroundThere is conflicting evidence regarding the association between decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and atherosclerosis. To this end, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to clarify the association.MethodsTo identify relevant studies, PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were systematically searched up to November 2015. All observational and comparative studies directly investigating the relationship between decreased BMD and clinical consequences of atherosclerotic vascular abnormalities, including carotid artery calcification (CAC), cardiovascular disease (CAD), and coronary artery disease (CAD) were obtained, without limitation of language or publication year.ResultsA total of 25 studies involving 10,299 patients were included. The incidence of atherosclerotic vascular abnormalities was significantly increased in low BMD patients, compared to patients with normal BMD (OR, 1.81, 95% CI [1.01, 2.19], p<0.00001)). Similar results were also observed for postmenopausal women (OR, 2.23, 95% CI [1.72, 2.89], p<0.00001). Subgroup analyses of osteopenia, osteoporosis, and normal BMD also revealed that the combined ORs for the incidence of atherosclerotic vascular abnormalities increased as BMD decreased. Of note, after adjusting for age, sex, body mass index (BMI) and other vascular risk factors, decreased BMD remained significantly associated with the incidence of atherosclerotic vascular abnormalities (OR, 2.96, 95% CI [2.25, 3.88], p < 0.00001).ConclusionsBased on the results of this study, decreased BMD is an independent predictor for the development of atherosclerosis in elderly individuals. Moreover, the risk of atherosclerotic vascular abnormalities increased as BMD decreased. Future studies focusing on individuals with different severities of atherosclerosis and comorbidities are of interest.

Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus [Ruprecht & Maximowicz] Maximowicz is an important understory species as well as a source of natural products in Asia. The natural source of Eleuthero has been over exploited for pharmacological use, but the manual restoration to rehabilitate its natural distribution has not yet been established. The root is one of the main underground organs in Eleuthero for the acquisition of pharmaceutical ingredients. Root growth also determines the seedling quality of this species for ecological restoration. In this study, Eleuthero seedlings were cultured for one growing cycle with chitosan oligosaccharide (CO) addition at rates of 0 and 25 ppm under artificial lightings by high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps and two light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with photosynthetic photon flux density set to 94±5 μmol m-2. Light spectra of red (R): green (G): blue (B) ratios were measured to be 43.7:54.6:1.7, 43.8:47:9.2, and 72.7:13.3:14 for the HPS, LED-1, and LED-2 treatments, respectively. In autumn, no interactive effect was found between CO addition and light spectra treatments on any root parameters. Compared to the HPS treatment, the LED-1 treatment resulted in a greater root dry weight and morphology by over 30%. The CO addition caused an increase of root growth by 40-70%. Fine roots in diameter between 0-0.4 mm were the main root part that contributed to the length, surface area, and root tip number. Therefore, LED lighting with the R/G/B spectrum of 43.8:47:9.2 was suggested for the culture of Eleuthero seedlings with the purpose of promoting dry weight and morphology of fine roots.
