: This study revealed that nurses working in skill mix model environments need more authority to delegate and educate NAs and to supervise and integrate nursing care. Study results may serve as a reference for hospital nursing practice in Taiwan.
The purpose of this study was to report the second phase of instrument development, a culturally sensitive questionnaire of childbearing attitudes to assess the psychosocial responses of infertile women. Using a nonexperimental quantitative design, we investigated 238 women who are undergoing in vitro fertilization treatment. Data collection and relevant planning occurred in two phases: in-depth interviews of women to generate items for the questionnaire and establishing the questionnaire's content and construct validity. Through factor analysis, five factors were extracted from the "attitude toward childbearing questionnaire": gender identification with self and society, insurance of marriage and inheritance, happy family life, spiritual investment, and continuing the family line and procreation. The total variance of these five factors was 64.31%. Cronbach's α and test-retest reliability were between .72 and .87 and between .60 and .76, respectively, demonstrating acceptable internal consistency and stability. The information obtained through the questionnaire could be used to provide infertile women with personal counseling and appropriate psychological support during and after assisted reproductive technology.
This study revealed that the major challenge in clinical cases of medical futility is for physicians, nurses, and patients to communicate effectively together during times of rapid and unanticipated change in patient condition. Thus, events of medical futility may be preventable. Past cases of medical futility involving critically ill patients may serve as references for guiding clinical care, education, and related policy formulation.
Aim
The purpose of this paper is to report on the evaluation of the online Global Leadership Mentoring Community, a programme designed to build relationships across seven global regions and promote leadership development for emerging nurse leaders.
Background
There is a pressing need and opportunity for sustainable global leadership mentoring programmes. This programme of Sigma Theta Tau International (Sigma) brought mentors and mentees together from across the world to build leadership capacity, understand global leadership issues and build networks. Community coordinators purposively selected mentors from each of Sigma’s seven Global Regions, and mentees were chosen through a process of snowball sampling. Mentors and mentees met monthly with quarterly group calls.
Methods
The study followed a programme evaluation, outcomes‐focused approach. All eleven pairs of mentors‐mentees were invited to complete online surveys at the outset and end of programme capturing both quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and for qualitative data, a thematic analysis.
Findings
Quantitative data confirmed that all 22 participants gained from the experience. From qualitative analysis, themes emerged illustrating the scope of achievements: 1. facilitation of successful outcomes for both mentors and mentees, 2. challenges of global mentoring and 3. strategies for successful global mentoring.
Discussion/Conclusion
Participants reported that creating global leadership is a longitudinal process that needs sustained attention to effect change. This evaluation identified many strengths of the programme and recommended its continuation to help further development of global leaders, particularly through focusing more purposefully on policy issues.
Implications for Nursing Policy
Empowerment of nurses globally through a Global Leadership Mentoring Community can improve leadership at all levels, thus emboldening their voices to influence nursing and health policy and ultimately improve patient care.
Objective
This study aimed to investigate the association of age and sex with metabolic syndrome (MS) in Taiwanese adults.
Methods
We extracted information of 4307 men and 4783 women aged 30–70 from the Taiwan Biobank.
Results
The interaction between age and sex on MS was significant (p-value = 0.0001). After stratification by sex, men and women aged 50–70 years (reference: 30≤age<50 years) had a higher risk of MS. The odds ratio (OR), 95% confidence interval (CI) was 2.316, 1.936–2.772 in men and 3.101, 2.561–3.754 in women. After stratification by age, men aged 50–70 years had a lower risk of MS compared to women (OR, 95% CI = 0.713, 0.598–0.851).
Conclusion
The interaction between age and sex on MS was significant. Sex-wise, both men and women aged 50–70 years had a higher likelihood of MS. Age-wise, men aged 50–70 years had a lower risk of MS compared to women.
Narrative approaches aim to provide an environment in which service users can experience the development of services through their service utilization experience. The narrative research approach and the narrative interview skills may help practitioners facilitate and cultivate person-centered nursing practice.
