A hierarchically nanostructured composite of MnO2/conjugated polymer/graphene is designed and fabricated for lithium ion batteries. The composite can produce a reversible capacity more than ten times that of plain MnO2‐based devices. The described approach can be used to create desired hierarchically nanostructured composite electrodes for broad applications in energy conversion/storage systems.
Developing yellow-seeded Brassica napus (rapeseed) with improved qualities is a major breeding goal. The intermediate and final metabolites of the phenylpropanoid and flavonoid pathways affect not only oil quality but also seed coat colour of B. napus. Here, the accumulation of phenolic compounds was analysed in the seed coats of black-seeded (ZY821) and yellow-seeded (GH06) B. napus. Using toluidine blue O staining and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, histochemical and biochemical differences were identified in the accumulation of phenolic compounds between ZY821 and GH06. Two and 13 unique flavonol derivatives were detected in ZY821 and GH06, respectively. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis revealed significant differences between ZY821 and GH06 in the expression of common phenylpropanoid biosynthetic genes (BnPAL and BnC4H), common flavonoid biosynthetic genes (BnTT4 and BnTT6), anthocyanin- and proanthocyandin-specific genes (BnTT3 and BnTT18), proanthocyandin-specific genes (BnTT12, BnTT10, and BnUGT2) and three transcription factor genes (BnTTG1, BnTTG2, and BnTT8) that function in the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway. These data provide insight into pigment accumulation in B. napus, and serve as a useful resource for researchers analysing the formation of seed coat colour and the underlying regulatory mechanisms in B. napus.
Prevalence of atopic dermatitis (AD) is increasing worldwide. Up to date, there has been no face-to-face nation-wide study in China. We aim to explore the prevalence of clinical diagnosed AD in children aged 1–7 ys in China. Twelve metropolises were chosen from different areas of China. In each region, we selected 4–10 kindergartens and 2–5 vaccination clinics randomly. A complete history-taking and skin examination were performed by dermatologists. The definite diagnosis of AD and the severity were determined by two or three dermatologists. All criteria concerned in UK diagnosis criteria, characteristic presentation of AD and atypical manifestations were recorded in detail. A total of 13998 children from 84 kindergartens and 40 vaccination clinics were included. The prevalence of AD was 12.94% by clinical diagnosis of dermatologists overall, with 74.6% of mild AD. Comparatively, prevalence of AD based on UK diagnostic criteria was 4.76%. This is the first face-to-face nation-wide study in Chinese children aged 1–7 ys, revealing that the prevalence of AD in children is closer to that of wealthier nations.
A theoretical study of zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) with an epoxy-pair chain (ZGO) is performed. The electronic transport properties are mainly evaluated by non-equilibrium Green's functions using the TRANSIESTA package. The results indicate that the graphene oxide can have a negative differential resistance (NDR) phenomenon, supported by bias-dependent transmission curves of different spin orientations. Applying non-zero bias voltages makes the density of states (DOS) of the right electrodes shift down. Due to an energy gap between the LUMO and LUMO+1 in ZGOs, with a certain bias, the conduction band of the right electrode cannot match the LUMO of the scattering region, then NDR occurs. With a larger bias, NDR ends when the second conduction band of the right electrode's DOS covers the LUMO of the scattering region. Since most of proposed ZGO systems possess such a gap between the LUMO and LUMO+1, NDR can be widely observed and this discovery may provide great potential applications in NDR-based nanoelectronics by using modified graphene materials.
The magnetic properties of three oxidized graphene structures with hydroxyl groups (cases A, B and C) have been investigated through spin-polarized density functional theory. The results reveal that in a graphene hexagonal ring structure, chemical bond formation by two non-neighbored hydroxyl-bonded carbon atoms with one carbon atom between (case B) can cause unpaired spins to produce a magnetic moment of 1.2 μ(B), while chemical bond formation by two neighbored hydroxyl-bonded carbon atoms (case A) or non-neighbored hydroxyl-bonded carbon atoms with two carbon atoms between (case C) cannot generate unpaired spins for nonmagnetic states. These magnetic oxidized graphenes have great promise for new spintronics. This work provides fundamentals to controllably synthesize or/and oxidized graphene with hydroxyl groups at specific carbon positions for magnetic properties.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
