Municipal solid waste management (MSWM) has become an important issue for countries around the world. The challenges are particularly notable in developing and transitional countries reflected mainly in inappropriate management, underdeveloped technology, an unfavorable economic situation and the lack of environmental awareness, causing a tremendous environmental impact. Today, various models are applied to analyze solid waste management systems from the regional to the municipal levels. Understanding the mechanisms and factors that currently drive the development of waste management is a crucial step for moving forward and planning sustainable waste management systems. The main objective of this paper is to apply the ISWM model, which is based on the Life-Cycle approach and follows the analytical framework methodology, to the research region. The transdisciplinary research framework was empirically tested and subsequently applied in the region Republika Srpska. Using the benchmark methodology, based on environmental, institutional and economical sustainability, the waste management is summarized in assessment profile. The results of the conducted analyses and the application of the developed model can be used further as a basis for the proposal of further strategic, political and managerial changes and support decision makers and stakeholders to handle waste in a cost-efficient and environmentally sound way.

Energy management is becoming an important topic for companies around the world. It influences organizational and technical processes and behaviors in the company in order to reduce the operational total energy consumption, improve resource efficiency, implement legislative requirements, and improve their corporate image. ISO 50001 International Standard was introduced as a global standard for managing energy use through that provides the unified framework for energy management. This paper introduces and describes model methodology and innovative software tool for benchmarking the energy management system in industrial companies. The software is designed to illustrate the current energy management situation in the company, the estimation of target state and to identify the energy efficiency potentials. Using the benchmark methodology, the energy management is summarized in an assessment profile. The results can be used as a reference guide for Energy Managers or extern consultants to understand the requirements and to implement ISO Standard 50001 in their company. A case study of an Austrian foundry is empirically tested and presented in order to evaluate the efficiency of the developed model.

Zusammenfassung: Steigende Materialkosten, neue (Umwelt-)Vorschriften und die Sorge um die Energiesicherheit treiben Bemühungen, die industrielle Ressourceneffizienz in der Europäischen Union zu erhöhen, stetig voran. Besonders energieintensive Industrien sind damit konfrontiert, die Ressourceneffizienz in ihren Prozessen zu implementieren und zu verbessern, da diese Kosten bereits mehr als 45 % ihrer Gesamtkosten ausmachen. Um das Unternehmen im betriebswirtschaftlichen Bereich zu unterstützen, wird die Materialflusskostenrechnung als ein strategisches Instrument verwendet. Die Materialflusskostenrechnung (MFKR) unterstützt das Unternehmen dabei, indem sie physische und finanzielle Daten verknüpft und Transparenz in Material-und Energieströmen sowie deren Kosten bringt. Das Ziel dieses Artikels ist es, die Bedeutung und mögliche Potenziale der MFKR für die Steigerung der Ressourceneffizienz in energieintensiven Unternehmen zu veranschaulichen und zu diskutieren.
