Campylobacter jejuniand C. colihave been associated with gastrointestinal disorders in human beings, due mainly to the consumption of chicken meat. Despite control measures for reducing contamination by these bacteria, the detection of Campylobacter in carcasses after chilling remains high.A total of 105 carcasses were assessed by the horizontal detection method in five federally inspected slaughterhouses in southern Brazil in 2012 and in the first three months of 2013. Campylobacterwas isolated in 37.1% of the carcasses, of which 97.5% contained C. jejuni and 2.5% were infected by C. coli. The rate of positive carcasses across the slaughterhouses ranged from 0 to 71.4%. Determining the occurrence of Campylobacteramong flocks is crucial for estimating the microbial load at specific points along the slaughtering process and for minimizing the risk of contamination of end products by Campylobacter.
O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a ação de dois ácidos orgânicos (ácido fórmico e ácido propiônico) e de um mananoligossacarídeo (MOS) adicionados à dieta no controle da infecção intestinal por Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) em frangos de corte. Neste estudo de 39 dias, foram utilizadas 150 aves, de um dia de idade, da linhagem Cobb, lote misto, livre de SE, divididas em seis tratamentos (T) com 25 animais cada, em que: T1 (ausência de infecção), T2 (ácidos orgânicos e ausência de infecção), T3 (ácidos orgânicos + MOS e ausência de infecção), T4 (ácidos orgânicos e infecção com SE), T5 (ácidos orgânicos + MOS e infecção com SE) e T6 (infecção com SE). No 4° dia após o alojamento, a cama foi instilada com SE e a cada sete dias cinco aves por grupo foram submetidas à eutanásia por deslocamento cervical e necropsiadas. Depois foram realizados exames bacteriológicos para SE nesses animais, utilizando fezes coletadas sobre a cama de maravalha dos grupos e das tonsilas cecais dos animais necropsiados. No 18° dia, somente 60% das aves estavam infectadas nos tratamentos T4 e T5; no 25° dia, 40% das aves no T4 e 20% no T5 estavam infectadas; no 32° dia 100% das amostras testadas foram negativas em ambos os tratamentos (T4 e T5). Constatou-se que o T6 foi 100% positivo até o 32° dia e no 39° dia reduziu em 20% o número de animais infectados. Dentro dos parâmetros de avaliação deste experimento, os ácidos orgânicos e o mananoligossacarídeo adicionados à dieta contribuíram para o controle da infecção por SE.
Alimentary habits of free-living Psittaciformes vary significantly among different species. Amazona pretrei is under risk of extinction and has very specific free-living dietary habits, which are based on Paraná pine seeds. Hemosiderosis is a pathologic process characterized by intracellular accumulation of iron without other evident lesions. It is associated with increased prevalence of infections, neoplasms, and hepatopathies. The purpose of this study was to quantify hepatic hemosiderin deposits in captive A. pretrei and verify their association with nutritional parameters. Liver samples were processed for histopathology and stained with Prussian blue. The sections were analyzed by computerized morphometry to quantify the hepatic hemosiderin deposits. The hepatic hemosiderosis rates showed positive correlation with age and time in captivity. These results suggest that the menus and commercial rations for Psittacidae must be carefully revised.

The great variety of ecological habitats, such as water, food and milk, may promote new virulence factors. To detect the encoding genes distending cytolethal toxin (CDT) by PCR and study the hemolytic activity with influence of chelation solutions and ions, 45 Campylobacter jejuni samples from poultry production origin were used to perform the hemolytic research. To check the influence of chelation agents and solution of ions in the hemolytic activity, samples of C. jejuni strains were grown in tryptone soy broth TSB containing chelation agents separately EDTA, acetic acid, CaCl 2 , MgCl 2 and FeCl 3 ions solutions in microaerophilic atmosphere and then streaked on 5% sheep blood tryptic soy agar (TSA). To perform the detection of cdtA, cdtB and cdtC genes the technique of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was used in 119 samples of C. jejuni from poultry production origin. We found 40% of samples showing hemolysis after growing with TSB. Only the acetic acid showed reduction in hemolysis. The prevalent gene profile was cdtABC in 37.8 % of the samples. It was observed that the results showed the presence of C. jejuni strains with virulent potential, due to presence of the CDT toxin genes and the hemolytic activity, which showed in vitro reduced when acetic acid was added.
