O objetivo deste artigo é discutir o papel dos seres humanos na manutenção dos ecossistemas, sobretudo no que se refere aos povos indígenas e agricultores familiares. Acreditamos que estes grupos humanos tem grande potencial para contribuir na manutenção dos serviços ecossistêmicos, na medida em que seus modos de vida e costumes estão culturalmente atrelados à preservação dos ecossistemas. Acreditamos que a espécie humana é fundamentalmente dependente do fluxo de serviços ecossistêmicos para ser protegida contra as mudanças ambientais e que a rápida perda de ecossistemas e paisagens culturalmente valiosos pode contribuir para rupturas sociais e marginalização de sociedades.
O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar a atual dieta dos Xavante da Aldeia Etenhiritipá, localizada na Terra Indígena Pimentel Barbosa, no estado de Mato Grosso, para uma compreensão mais adequada de determinantes das condições de alimentação desse povo. Foram coletados dados acerca dos alimentos consumidos, assim como as percepções sobre a prevalência de cárie dentária na população como indicativo do alto consumo de açúcares. Optou-se por uma abordagem metodológica qualitativa utilizando as seguintes técnicas: observação participante; entrevistas abertas; e recordatório 24 horas de consumo alimentar. Como resultados, identificou-se um baixo consumo de alimentos tradicionais e o aumento da dependência e compra de itens alimentares na área urbana. Quanto à cárie dentária, a maior parte dos entrevistados mencionou algum tipo de sinal associado à doença bucal. O enfoque deu-se em construir uma explicação contextualizada sobre as práticas alimentares dentro da atual realidade do grupo.
