THE ESTABLISHMENT of mineral extraction and mineral transformation industries in the Western Brazilian Amazon in the last five decades created recurrent and widespread expectations of a fast regional industrialization resulting from "comparative advantages" brought by the fulfillment of the world demand for mineral commodities. Mineral and metallurgic activities have proven nevertheless to have a very limited capacity to foster broad and socially rooted development dynamics. This phenomenon may be partially explained by the particular dynamics of technological innovation in those industries, by the institutional environment in which they are embedded and finally by the secondary role played by the social, cultural and ecological characteristics of the region in order to guarantee a competitive valorization of the mineral resources of the Western Amazon
There have been ethnoveterinary reports from around the world investigating plant usage in therapeutic protocols; however, there is no information regarding the ethnoveterinary practices in Brazilian Amazonia. The objective of this work was to register and document the ethnoveterinary knowledge of the inhabitants of the Island of Marajó, eastern Amazonia, Brazil. In the study, interviews were conducted with 50 individuals, with the application of semi-structured questionnaires that were quantitatively analyzed using descriptive statistic methods of frequency distribution. Use-value was calculated to determine the most important species. Samples of plants that were reported to have medicinal value were collected and identified by botanical classification. Fifty plants, distributed among 48 genera and 34 families, were indicated for 21 different medicinal uses. The family Asteraceae had the largest number of reported species; Carapa guianensis Aubl., Copaifera martii Hayne, Crescentia cujete L., Caesalpinia ferrea Mart., Chenopodium ambrosioides L., Jatropha curcas L. and Momordica charantia L. were species with highest use-value. The plant parts that were more commonly utilized for the preparation of ethnoveterinary medicines were the leaves (56%), bark (18%), roots (14%), seeds (14%) and fruit (8%). With regard to usage, tea was reported as a usage method by 56% of the informants; most preparations (90.9%) utilized only a single plant. In addition to medicinal plants, informants reported using products of animal and mineral origin. The present study contributed to the construction of an inventory of Marajó Island's ethnoveterinary plants, which might be the basis for future scientific validation studies. The present study contributed to the establishment of an inventory of plants used in ethnoveterinary practices in this region of the Brazilian eastern Amazon. Future phytochemical and pharmacological studies are needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of the identified plants, enabling communities to use them in a more economic, effective and safe manner.
Significant differences were observed in hematocrit and hemoglobin values between males and females. The levels of alkaline phosphatase in the tissues were significantly influenced by age. There was also a sex influence on blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels. The results show that some hematological and clinical chemistry parameters in owl monkeys may be influenced by sex and age.
Droga vegetal. AbstractLibidibia ferrea is a plant popularly used for therapeutic purposes, including processes to accelerate wound healing. The present investigation analyzed the chemical composition and the healing potential of ethanolic extract of the fruits of L. ferrea (Mart. ex Tul.) in rats. This study used 24 Wistar rats divided into four groups. In all animals a piece of skin on the back was removed and each group received a different treatment: NaCl 0.9%, Chlorhexidine digluconate 1%, ethanol extract of the fruits of Libidibia ferrea 12.5% and 50%. The healing process was evaluated macroscopically and microscopically. The ethanolic extract of the fruits of L. ferrea 12.5% was significantly more efficient than the 50% healing in rat skin.
PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Hemograma, Leucograma, Diagnóstico, Patologia Clínica Blood reference intervals and the influence of age and gender on hematologic and biochemical parameters of Santa Ines sheep bred in the eastern Amazon ABSTRACTBlood count and biochemical tests are used to diagnose diseases in domestic animals. These tests can be influenced by age, gender, nutrition, breed, species and environmental conditions. Thus, data from one region should not be extrapolated to animals raised in other regions. The objective of this study was to determine the hematological and biochemical values of different ages and genders of Santa Inês sheep, raised in the eastern Amazon. There were examined 91 sheep that were assigned to three groups: G1 (three to six months old, n = 31); G2 (seven to 24 months old, n = 30) and G3 (above 24 months old, n = 30). The blood cell count, white blood count and biochemical determinations were made with an automatic counter and a semi-automatic analyzer, respectively. Mean values were compared using the Tukey test. The number of erythrocytes, the red blood indices, the thrombogram, eosinophils, total protein, urea and creatinine concentrations were influenced by the age of the animals. The erythrocyte coefficient of variation and the creatinine concentration were influenced by gender, and were greater in males. The neutrophil:lymphocyte (N:L) ratio was greater than one for all age groups. This study led to the determination of reference values for sheep raised in the Eastern Amazon and demonstrated that ...
