AST, CK and GGT enzymes serum activities in Crioulo horsesAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of age, sex, management and pregnancy status on aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatine kinase (CK) and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) enzymes serum activities of Crioulo horses. One hundred and forty-two horses, divided into six group were analyzed: yearlings; free activity of adult horses; training adult horses; male adult horses; nonpregnant and pregnant females. The CK enzyme activity value was higher in adult horses than in yearlings, and the same result was found when comparing free activity and training horses. Nonpregnant females had higher values for CK and GGT comparing to male horses, and CK values were higher in pregnant comparing to nonpregnant females. Age, sex, management and pregnancy status influence on CK serum activity, and sex influences on GGT serum activity.Index terms: serum biochemistry, muscular enzyme, hepatic disease, myopathy.
Além de influenciar na imunidade sanguínea, o cortisol também interfere na citologia do trato respiratório, diminuindo a ativação e poder de fagocitose de macrófagos alveolares e o metabolismo oxidativo de neutrófilos do lavado respiratório (Crisman et al. 1992, Raidal et al. 1997, Ishizaki et al. 2005 The study sought to evaluate whether environment temperature (T) and relative humidity (UR) had an impact on the leucogram and cytology of the respiratory tract of healthy cattle. Blood and tracheobronchial lavage were collected from 5 female healthy 4 to 7-month-old Jersey calves in three moments: T1 (T=5 o C, UR=93%) T2 (control environment temperature, T 22 o C, UR 80%), and T3 (T=30 o C, UR=41%). Monocytosis in the leucogram and a decrease in alveolar giant macrophages were observed in T3. It appears that the weather condition had an influence on the respiratory immune system of the calves due to a stress situation. We conclude that elevated temperature associated with low relative humidity appears to favor respiratory disease in 4 to 7-month-old calves.INDEX TERMS: Respiratory tract, environment temperature, cattle.
Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is the feline analogue to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and utilizes parallel modes of receptor-mediated entry. The FIV surface glycoprotein (SU) is an important target for induction of neutralizing antibodies, and autoantibodies to the FIV binding receptor (CD134) block infection ex vivo; thus highlighting the potential for immunotherapies which utilize anti-receptor antibodies to block viral infection. To determine whether vaccination with CD134-SU complexes could induce protection against FIV infection, cats (n = 5 per group) were immunized with soluble CD134, recombinant FIV-SU protein, and/or CD134+SU complexes. Two trials were performed with different antigen combinations and vaccination schedules. In vivo generation of anti-CD134 and anti-SU IgG antibodies was measured, and in vitro neutralization assays were conducted. Immunization induced production of anti-CD134 and anti-SU antibodies that significantly inhibited FIV infection in vitro. However, no vaccine combination protected cats from FIV infection, and neat serum from vaccinated cats enhanced FIV growth in vitro. CD134+SU vaccinated cats exhibited increased CD4:CD8 ratio immediately prior to challenge, and antibodies were much more efficiently generated against vaccine by-products versus target antigens. Results suggest vaccination against viral and cryptic receptor epitopes yields neutralizing antibodies that synergistically inhibit FIV infection in vitro. Factors contributing to vaccine failure may include: (1) Heat-labile serum factors that enhance viral replication, (2) changes in circulating target cell populations induced by vaccination, and (3) weak immunogenicity of neutralizing epitopes compared to off-target vaccine components. Results reinforce the need to monitor vaccine preparation components and avoid non-specific immune stimulation during vaccination.
Acanthocytosis was observed with a variety of neoplastic and nonneoplastic diseases. While clearly commonly associated, the presence of acanthocytes in a blood smear should not be considered pathognomonic for hemangiosarcoma in dogs.
Hepatic and renal functions in broilers fed on diets with aflatoxins and natural clinoptiloliteAbstract -The objective of this study was to evaluate serum minerals and hepatic and renal activities in broiler chicks fed with diets containing aflatoxins and diets with aflatoxins and natural clinoptilolite clay. Five hundred and twenty-eight Ross male broiler chicks were grouped in six treatments with four replications each: T 1 -control: diet free from aflatoxins and clinoptilolite; T 2 -aflatoxins 5 ppm diet; T 3 -0.25% clinoptilolite diet; T 4 -aflatoxins 5 ppm and 0.25% clinoptilolite diet; T 5 -0.5% clinoptilolite diet; and T 6 -aflatoxins 5 ppm and 0.5% clinoptilolite diet. The birds were treated from the 1 st to the 42 nd day of age. Seventy-two birds were slaughtered. Calcium, phosphorus, urea, creatinine, uric acid, cholesterol, triglycerides and gammaglutamil transferase (GGT) were all analyzed in serum. Aflatoxins decrease cholesterol; and 0.25% clinoptilolite decreases serum uric acid and has no effect at 0.5%. Aflatoxins plus 0.25% clinoptilolite diets decrease creatinine, uric acid and cholesterol serum levels. Also aflatoxins plus 0.5% clinoptilolite diets decrease creatinine and cholesterol, but increase GGT serum levels.
