Die Form des Streitens um die richtige Katharsisdeutung zwischen Lessing, Mendelssohn und Nicolai im Briefwechsel über das Trauerspiel. -Ein diskursanalytischer Versuch Man muß also die Ausführungen Lessings gleichsam wider den Strich lesen. 1 Der Katharsisdiskurs indiziert in der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts eine neue Debatte über Funktion und Wirkung von Literatur. Das bedeutet, daß sich das ursprüngliche Aristotelische Katharsistheorem von einer gattungsspezifischen Definition zu einem allgemein ästhetischen Theorem zu wandeln beginnt. Der im Katharsisdiskurs indizierte Diskurs über die Emanzipation der Leidenschaften, also nicht deren faktischer Vollzug, ist somit -dies sei einmal vorweg thesenhaft formuliert -das psychohistorische Äquivalent zur soziohistorischen Emanzipation des Bürgertums im 18. Jahrhundert. Der Emanzipation der Leidenschaften nimmt sich ein eigener Diskurs an, der nicht nur ihrer Produktion, sondern auch Selektion, Kontrolle und Kanalisierung dient. Das Medium, das die Emanzipation des Bürgertums begleitet und vorantreibt, ist zugleich auch das Medium ihrer selbstgeschaffenen Kontrolle: die Literatur. Dem »Diskursensemble« 2 , um einen Begriff Michel Foucaults aufzunehmen, wie es sich im Briefwechsel über das Trauerspiel zwischen Lessing, Mendelssohn und Nicolai konstituiert, kommt vor diesem Hintergrund eine besondere Bedeutung zu. Hier findet man gleichsam den Probelauf dreier unterschiedlicher Katharsiskonzepte, die im nicht immer sanft geführten Wettstreit miteinander konkurrieren und dabei drei gänzlich verschiedene Diskurstypen über Funktion und Wirkung von Literatur repräsentieren.
