Nada em biologia faz sentido exceto à luz da evolução, assim sintetizou Dobzhansky em seu artigo de 1964, ao tratar a importância da teoria evolutiva para o entendimento das ciências naturais. Mas a realidade observada no ensino de ciências no país não poderia ser mais incongruente, visto que há dificuldades e contradições devido a diversos fatores, que vão desde a formação de docentes à estruturação dos conteúdos curriculares. O tema evolução é tratado geralmente como um dos tópicos finais em biologia no ensino médio, sendo reservadas apenas algumas aulas. A partir desta problemática no ensino da teoria evolutiva, este artigo discute a importância de aliar os espaços, materiais didáticos e humanos existentes em um Museu de Ciências Naturais para o ensino de evolução em diferentes níveis da educação formal. Este trabalho visa apresentar o relato da oficina "Sobrevivendo em Novas Terras", atividade que integra o projeto Museu de Ciências Naturais vai à Escola da Universidade de Caxias do Sul, e aborda a teoria evolutiva e conceitos da seleção natural para estudantes do Ensino Fundamental. Reflete-se, aqui, sobre a importância e o potencial de se aplicar metodologias lúdicas de aprendizagem e o auxílio de coleções biológicas para o entendimento de conceitos evolutivos, desde o Ensino Fundamental. O roteiro desta oficina se dividiu em parte teórica, com a exposição e manuseio dos exemplares da Coleção Didática de Zoologia, e em parte prática, com o uso de brincadeiras e provas para simular alguns conceitos que levam ao fenômeno de especiação. Através de jogos lúdicos, os estudantes puderam perceber o funcionamento de alguns conceitos abordados na explicação teórica, como a variabilidade de caracteres dentro de populações que são selecionadas pelo meio, o processo de especiação e também a correção de equívocos que muitos estudantes têm acerca da teoria evolutiva.
Os espaços não formais de ensino são essenciais na construção da aprendizagem, pois proporcionam aos visitantes experiências diferenciadas e complementam as temáticas desenvolvidas nos ambientes formais de ensino. Espaços de visitação com aquários são destinados para lazer e educação. Nestes ambientes os visitantes observam diferentes ecossistemas aquáticos e são sensibilizados às questões ambientais. O UCS Aquarium, do Museu de Ciências Naturais da Universidade de Caxias do Sul, objetiva a compreensão dos fatores que influenciam no equilíbrio dos ecossistemas aquáticos e a instrumentalização dos visitantes para desenvolver um comportamento ético frente aos recursos naturais. O Aquarium possui 14 aquários, sendo 13 de água doce e 1 de água salgada. São 101 espécies entre peixes, equinodermos, crustáceos e plantas aquáticas, totalizando 2107 indivíduos. Além dos aquários, encontram-se painéis didáticos, maquete da planície costeira do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul e dioramas sobre o impacto dos resíduos no meio marinho. As visitações de escolas são monitoradas, mediante agendamento. Este trabalho tem por objetivo divulgar as atividades de educação ambiental realizadas no UCS Aquarium para as escolas da região e a importância destas para a sensibilização e preservação dos ecossistemas aquáticos. No período de setembro de 2017 a junho de 2018 o Aquarium recebeu 12.314 estudantes de instituições da região. Estas monitorias complementam os conhecimentos adquiridos na escola, fazem analogias entre um ecossistema artificial e natural, a importância do equilíbrio deste para a sobrevivência dos seres vivos, reconhecem diferentes espécies e sensibilizam-se com a problemática dos resíduos nestes ecossistemas. A partir desta construção de conhecimentos, durante a visitação ao UCS Aquarium, os estudantes são desafiados a refletirem sobre suas ações e são motivados a conservar e preservar o meio ambiente, além de serem estimulados a disseminar as informações adquiridas neste espaço de visitação, ressaltando os impactos que os ecossistemas aquáticos sofrem com o descaso quanto aos resíduos e consequentemente, o próprio ser humano.
