Os espaços não formais de ensino são essenciais na construção da aprendizagem, pois proporcionam aos visitantes experiências diferenciadas e complementam as temáticas desenvolvidas nos ambientes formais de ensino. Espaços de visitação com aquários são destinados para lazer e educação. Nestes ambientes os visitantes observam diferentes ecossistemas aquáticos e são sensibilizados às questões ambientais. O UCS Aquarium, do Museu de Ciências Naturais da Universidade de Caxias do Sul, objetiva a compreensão dos fatores que influenciam no equilíbrio dos ecossistemas aquáticos e a instrumentalização dos visitantes para desenvolver um comportamento ético frente aos recursos naturais. O Aquarium possui 14 aquários, sendo 13 de água doce e 1 de água salgada. São 101 espécies entre peixes, equinodermos, crustáceos e plantas aquáticas, totalizando 2107 indivíduos. Além dos aquários, encontram-se painéis didáticos, maquete da planície costeira do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul e dioramas sobre o impacto dos resíduos no meio marinho. As visitações de escolas são monitoradas, mediante agendamento. Este trabalho tem por objetivo divulgar as atividades de educação ambiental realizadas no UCS Aquarium para as escolas da região e a importância destas para a sensibilização e preservação dos ecossistemas aquáticos. No período de setembro de 2017 a junho de 2018 o Aquarium recebeu 12.314 estudantes de instituições da região. Estas monitorias complementam os conhecimentos adquiridos na escola, fazem analogias entre um ecossistema artificial e natural, a importância do equilíbrio deste para a sobrevivência dos seres vivos, reconhecem diferentes espécies e sensibilizam-se com a problemática dos resíduos nestes ecossistemas. A partir desta construção de conhecimentos, durante a visitação ao UCS Aquarium, os estudantes são desafiados a refletirem sobre suas ações e são motivados a conservar e preservar o meio ambiente, além de serem estimulados a disseminar as informações adquiridas neste espaço de visitação, ressaltando os impactos que os ecossistemas aquáticos sofrem com o descaso quanto aos resíduos e consequentemente, o próprio ser humano.
