The Romano-Byzantine wall in Amida/Diyarbakır is quite singular as it was entirely built, in the likeness of the city itself, from blocks of basalt stone taken from the volcanic lava of the Karacadağ volcano, whose eruptions formed the table hill upon which it stands. We propose a brief overview of similar constructions in neighbouring areas before examining the specificities of the Amida quarries and how their study might contribute to the general understanding of the structure and to the social, cultural and economic history of the site and its region.
