Of de client-centered therapie nog toekomst heeft is de centrale vraagstelling van dit artikel. Deze vraag wordt bezien binnen de actuele context waarbinnen de psychotherapie als geheel zich bevindt. Gezocht wordt naar de eigen identiteit van de client-centered therapie tegenover andere richtingen, in het bijzonder de gedragstherapie en de psychoanalyse. Ook wordt aandacht besteed aan de vraag in hoeverre existentie¨le en religieuze vragen tot het domein van de client-center-ed therapie behoren. Betoogd wordt dat de client-centered therapie haar identiteit zou moeten ontlenen aan haar persoonsgerichte karakter en dat dat in de toekomst ook haar belangrijkste bijdrage is aan de gewenste eenheid van de psychotherapie. InleidingVerschillende vooraanstaande client-centered therapeuten, onder wie Rogers zelf, hebben de afgelopen jaren hun bezorgdheid geuit over de tanende invloed van de op Rogers' werk gebaseerde 'client-centered' of 'personcentered' psychotherapie (onder anderen: Dijkhuis, 1991;Lietaer, 1990;Rogers, 1986;Vossen, 1988; Roundtable discussion, 1986). Die zorg heeft niet zozeer betrekking op de bijdrage die de client-centered therapie in het verleden binnen de psychotherapie heeft gehad. Deze wordt algemeen erkend en lijkt ook niet serieus voor discussie vatbaar. De zorg komt eerder voort uit de dreiging geen rol van betekenis meer te spelen in de actuele academische en professionele wereld. Een niet geheel ondenkbaar toekomstscenario zou hierbij kunnen zijn dat er met respect terug gekeken wordt op wat Rogers heeft ingebracht in de psychotherapie, maar dat dit als onvoldoende basis wordt gezien voor een aparte therapierichting. Dit gedeeltelijk omdat iedereen het op een bepaalde manier heeft overgenomen, gedeeltelijk ook omdat het gezien wordt als een al te ideosyncratisch cultuurprodukt van een lang vervlogen en achterhaalde tijd.Deze zienswijze heeft ongetwijfeld ook te maken met het feit dat het getij voor de psychotherapie in het algemeen niet meer zo gunstig is als in de bloeiperiode van de client-centered therapie. Dat heeft onder meer te maken met de effectiviteits-en efficie¨ntie-vraag die op dit moment een grote rol speelt in de psychotherapie. Allereerst is het daardoor niet langer vanzelfsprekend dat psychotherapie bij allerlei psychoneurotische problemen de eerste en voor de hand liggende behandeling is. In toenemende mate zal deze taak door de biologische psychiatrie overgenomen worden nu er steeds meer middelen op de markt lijken te komen die effectief symptomen bestrijden en dat doen met steeds minder bijwerkingen. Voor veel clie¨nten en therapeuten (vooral psychiaters) is dit nu al een verlokkelijk alternatief.Voor zover de psychotherapie nog toekomst heeft lijkt die dan ook vooral aan de symptoomgerichte, kortdurende, directieve vormen van psychotherapie, waarvan de gedragstherapie de meest succesvolle en invloedrijke is. De titel van deze bijdrage moet eerder worden opgevat als de omschrijving van een wenselijkheid dan als de vaststelling van een feit. Niettemin meen ik dat heden ten dage de eenheid van de psychotherapie groeiende is, allereerst in de praktijk, maar in toenemende mate ook in de theorievorming. De oorzaken van deze ontwikkeling zijn velerlei en liggen op maatschappelijk, economisch, wetenschappelijk en vakinhoudelijk gebied. Toch geloof ik dat ze allemaal zijn terug te voeren op een meer fundamentele oorzaak die ik cultuurhistorisch zou willen noemen. Deze komt erop neer dat wij in een periode lijken te leven waarin men sceptisch staat tegenover alomvattende systemen en universele pretenties. Men is eerder geneigd pragmatisch te werk te gaan, ambities niet te hoog te stellen en overal wel wat in te zien.Een dergelijk klimaat is zeker gunstig voor de eenwording van de psychotherapie. Zoals met het wegvallen van de grote ideologiee¨n de politieke partijen dichter bij elkaar zijn gekomen, zo lijken ook de grenzen tussen de psychotherapeutische scholen steeds meer te vervagen. Het ligt voor de hand dat dit tot een bestaanscrisis kan leiden bij afzonderlijke partijen en scholen, omdat de eigen identiteit niet langer duidelijk is. Om dit te voorkomen treden allerlei processen in werking en het is frappant hoe zeer deze in politieke partijen en psychotherapieverenigingen op elkaar lijken. Een van de meest opmerkelijke daarvan is dat men van de concurrentie iets overneemt en dat, niet zelden zonder bronvermelding, onder eigen vlag aan de man brengt. Wat opvallend weinig gebeurt -terwijl dat toch te verwachten zou zijn -is dat men zich scherp profileert om de eigen identiteit duidelijk te maken. Uit de praktijk van de politieke partijen weten wij waarom dit achterwege blijft: het kost stemmen! Toch zijn er tegelijkertijd ook mensen die juist wel de oorspronkelijke identiteit willen profileren, uit bezorgdheid dat belangrijke elementen uit het betreffende gedachtengoed verloren gaan. Zij worden niet zelden afgeschilderd als 'puristen' of 'orthodoxen'. Zij lijken veelal een achterhoedegevecht te leveren tegen de 'revisionisten', die het pleit al gewonnen hebben. Op langere termijn kan het idee van een 'verloren wedstrijd' echter een vergissing blijken te zijn: als achterhaald beschouwde benaderingen komen plotseling weer in de mode, zij het soms onder een andere naam of in een nieuw jasje.
