En las últimas dos décadas una diversidad de temas y problemas vinculados a los pueblos originarios adquirió una presencia considerable en la agenda de políticas públicas y derechos.El sistema educativo argentino fue caja de resonancia de estos cambios y vehículo de expansión de nuevos relatos que tímidamente empezaron a poner interrogantes sobre el mito fundacional de una Argentina racial y culturalmente europea y blanca, y un territorio sin indios. Las disciplinas escolares vinculadas a las ciencias sociales fueron un terreno especialmente fértil para este proceso. En este artículo nos detendremos en el análisis del modo como fueron representadas las sociedades indígenas en los libros de texto para el nivel primario desde los albores del sistema educativo en las últimas décadas del siglo XIX hasta la actualidad. En particular nos centraremos en los capítulos dedicados a historia de los libros de texto para 4 grado, ya que es en ellos en los que aparece por primera vez ese contenido desde una perspectiva histórica, lo que le da cierto carácter fundante a las representaciones de los «indios» que los niños construyen en ese momento de la escolaridad.
