INTRODUCCIÓNEl empleo de rip-rap como medio de protección contra la erosión de márgenes resulta una herramienta de amplia utilización en el campo de las obras civiles. Su colocación proporciona un mejoramiento de las condiciones de estabilidad del talud debido, por un lado, a la carga que representa el enrocado y, por el otro, al efecto de retención que el elemento de filtro ejerce sobre el material constitutivo de la margen. Esto indica que la extensión final de la protección, en su desarrollo transversal a la corriente, resultará de un balance entre un valor mí-nimo admisible del coeficiente de estabilidad del talud, una vez provocadas las erosiones al pie de la protección, y las limitantes económicas que hagan viable la obra.El presente trabajo tiene por objeto analizar la incidencia que la presencia de la protección tiene sobre el desarrollo de las erosiones que se verifican al pie de la misma, y a su vez evaluar có-mo el proceso de deformación y falla de la protección incide sobre los coeficientes de estabilidad del conjunto estructura-suelo, respecto de los estimados a partir de los supuestos considerados en el diseño. La práctica habitual involucra determinaciones del coeficiente de estabilidad que presupone que la protección se comporta como un continuo, deformándose ante las erosiones del lecho. ResumenEl empleo de rip-rap como medida de protección contra la erosión de márgenes resulta una herramienta ampliamente difundida en el campo de las obras civiles. Su colocación aumenta las condiciones de estabilidad del talud debido, por un lado, al peso que transmite el enrocado y por otro, al efecto de retención que sobre el terreno natural provoca el filtro que constituye la interfase entre la protección y el suelo. En este trabajo se analiza la incidencia que la presencia de la protección tiene sobre los procesos erosivos observados sobre la margen y el lecho, erosiones que a su vez condicionan la extensión que ha de alcanzar la cubierta. Asimismo, se estudian las deformaciones y fallas observadas en el revestimiento producto de las erosiones ocurridas, comparando esos resultados con los supuestos habitualmente adoptados. Los desarrollos efectuados permiten concluir que ante iguales condiciones hidráulicas y sedimentológicas, las máximas erosiones se maximizan en presencia de la protección. Las mismas, provocan deformaciones y fallas del revestimiento que difieren de los supuestos de cálculo, los que habitualmente no consideran la falla parcial de la cubierta. Resultan así valores del coeficiente de estabilidad, del conjunto estructura-suelo, hasta un 20% menores que los obtenidos a partir de erosiones calculadas y deformaciones hipotéticas.
En este trabajo se vuelcan parte de los esfuerzos realizados por investigadores de la Facultad de Ingeniería y Ciencias Hídricas de la Universidad Nacional del Litoral y del Laboratorio de Hidráulica del Instituto Nacional del Agua para estudiar la erosión junto a estribos de puentes aliviadores durante la última década en Argentina. Por una parte, estudios experimentales demostraron que las erosiones locales en estribos de puentes aliviadores, cuando estos son de paredes verticales, dependen tanto de las condiciones iniciales del escurrimiento junto a él, como del proceso de redistribución de caudales que se produce durante su desarrollo. Este último fenómeno pudo ser adecuadamente evaluado mediante la incorporación del ancho del puente como variable fundamental en el análisis, la que caracteriza al proceso en su conjunto como un típico fenómeno en planta Por otro lado, se describieron los procesos de erosión local por efecto de los vórtices de eje horizontal y vertical y de erosión por contracción, en estribos no verticales, de uso frecuente en puentes aliviadores. Mediante estudios en modelos físicos, se analizaron cómo es el flujo líquido y se describe la configuración del lecho tras el pasaje de crecidas, indicando la importancia relativa de los diferentes procesos erosivos.

INTRODUCCIÓNLa extensión de una protección marginal, en su desarrollo transversal a la corriente, resulta siempre un compromiso a asumir entre la necesaria estabilidad que debe tener la estructura a lo largo de su vida útil y las limitantes económicas que toda obra de ingeniería posee. Dos factores resultan fundamentales a la hora de definir la extensión de una protección: la erosión esperable al pie de la misma, luego de colocada, y la estabilidad del conjunto estructurasuelo una vez ocurridas las erosiones del lecho y deformada la protección. Como contrapartida de estas definiciones, la realidad de la práctica ingenieril indica que en muchos casos las erosiones son calculadas sin tener en cuenta la presencia de la protección y, más aún, las longitudes de éstas no son evaluadas a partir de un análisis de estabilidad que involucre una adecuada descripción del proceso de deformación de la cubierta.En este trabajo se presentan evidencias de laboratorio y de campo que demuestran cómo una adecuada estimación de las erosiones en las proximidades de la margen, ante la ocurrencia de crecidas extraordinarias, y el cálculo de la estabilidad del conjunto estructura-suelo en secciones críticas del emplazamiento, podrían resultar indicadores útiles del peligro de destrucción de obras de protección ya construidas. Estas consideraciones han sido, asimismo, la base para el desarrollo de una metodología que permite estimar la extensión a dar a una protección de margen en su desarrollo transversal a la corriente.
