INTRODUCCIÓNLa extensión de una protección marginal, en su desarrollo transversal a la corriente, resulta siempre un compromiso a asumir entre la necesaria estabilidad que debe tener la estructura a lo largo de su vida útil y las limitantes económicas que toda obra de ingeniería posee. Dos factores resultan fundamentales a la hora de definir la extensión de una protección: la erosión esperable al pie de la misma, luego de colocada, y la estabilidad del conjunto estructurasuelo una vez ocurridas las erosiones del lecho y deformada la protección. Como contrapartida de estas definiciones, la realidad de la práctica ingenieril indica que en muchos casos las erosiones son calculadas sin tener en cuenta la presencia de la protección y, más aún, las longitudes de éstas no son evaluadas a partir de un análisis de estabilidad que involucre una adecuada descripción del proceso de deformación de la cubierta.En este trabajo se presentan evidencias de laboratorio y de campo que demuestran cómo una adecuada estimación de las erosiones en las proximidades de la margen, ante la ocurrencia de crecidas extraordinarias, y el cálculo de la estabilidad del conjunto estructura-suelo en secciones críticas del emplazamiento, podrían resultar indicadores útiles del peligro de destrucción de obras de protección ya construidas. Estas consideraciones han sido, asimismo, la base para el desarrollo de una metodología que permite estimar la extensión a dar a una protección de margen en su desarrollo transversal a la corriente. EVIDENCIAS DE LABORATORIOEstudios antecedentes Zanardi et al., 2002) han demostrado, en base a experimentación de laboratorio, la incidencia que tiene la protección sobre el desarrollo de erosiones al pie de la misma. El presente trabajo tiene como objeto determinar, mediante experiencias de laboratorio, la incidencia de las dimensiones y geometría en planta de una protección flexible sobre el sector erosionado en las inmediaciones de un estribo de pared vertical, y evaluar las mínimas dimensiones del revestimiento a fin de asegurar la estabilidad de la obra. Los ensayos fueron realizados en un canal de grandes dimensiones ubicado en la Nave I del Laboratorio de Hidráulica de la Facultad de Ingeniería y Ciencias Hídricas (FICH) de la Universidad Nacional del Litoral (Santa Fe, Argentina). Los experimentos fueron realizados en condiciones de agua clara y manteniendo constante los parámetros hidráulicos. Los resultados muestran que bajo diferentes geometrías de la protección, la máxima profundidad de erosión se mantuvo semejante a la situación de referencia. Sin embargo, la reducción del área del revestimiento deja zonas del lecho muy expuestas a los procesos erosivos, desestabilizando la protección y dejándola suspendida de su anclaje. Por este motivo es necesario incorporar al estudio un análisis de estabilidad geotécnica del sistema lecho erosionado-protección.
Las cubiertas flexibles son medidas de protección frecuentemente utilizadas para contrarrestar procesos erosivos locales que se desarrollan en sitios de puentes. En este trabajo se analizan, de manera experimental, la incidencia que sobre las erosiones resultantes tienen la longitud de la protección (en el sentido de la corriente principal) y la extensión de la misma desde el extremo del estribo hacia la margen, y con su correspondiente modo de fijación al lecho. Se estudio también, la modificación que sufre la típica configuración 3D del flujo junto a un estribo como consecuencia de la presencia de la protección y el impacto que dicho proceso tiene sobre los mecanismos de erosión actuantes. Los resultados muestran que el desarrollo longitudinal del sector erosionado se incrementó de acuerdo con la longitud que la protección tuvo en cada caso, afectando zonas del lecho no comprometidas en la situación sin protección. El ancho de la hoya de erosión no experimentó cambios significativos ante variaciones en las dimensiones del revestimiento. Protecciones de estribos largas promueven la superposición de mecanismos 3D, típicos en las cercanías del estribo, con fenómenos 2D, asociados a la contracción del flujo, cuya incidencia se incrementa hacia aguas abajo del mismo.
