Meningiomas account for about 30% of all primary brain tumors. It is difficult to predict the behaviour of meningiomas, and identification of protein markers responsible for the regulation of cell proliferation can be very helpful. The aim of this study was to evaluate immunohistochemical expression of Ki-67 and p53 in 170 meningiomas.A total number of 170 meningioma samples were classified according to WHO, immunohistochemicaly stained for Ki-67 and p53 and analysed using light microscope.Of 170 meningiomas analysed, 142 were grade I, 17 grade II and 11 grade III. Female to male ratio was 1.42:1. Statistically significant correlation was found between tumor grade and Ki-67 (p<0.001). There was significant correlation between Ki-67 levels and tumor subtypes (p=0.009). The optimal cut-off value for Ki-67 was 3.195. Tumors with Ki-67 ≤3.195 were 2 cm smaller than tumors with Ki-67 >3.195. Statistically significant correlation was found regarding p53 expression and tumor size (p=0.034). No correlation was established between Ki-67 or p53 and location of the tumor.According to positive correlation between tumor grade and subtype with Ki-67 levels, as well as positive correlation between Ki-67 and p53 with tumor size, indicate that Ki-67 and p53 might have influence on meningioma development and progression.
There is emerging evidence that lipids play an important role in many neurodegenerative processes, for example in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although different lipid alterations in the AD brain have been reported, there have only been very few investigations of lipid changes in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Recent developments in mass spectrometry (MS) have enabled fast and sensitive detection of lipid species in different biological matrixes. In this study we developed an on-line HPLC-MS method for phospholipid profiling in the CSF based on nano-HPLC separation using an Amide column and detection with electrospray (ESI) quadrupole-time of flight (QTOF) MS. We achieved good separation, reproducibility, and sensitivity in monitoring of the major phospholipid classes, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylinositol (PI), and sphingomyelin (SM) in CSF. To emphasize the applicability of the method, a pilot study was performed on a group of CSF samples (N = 16) from individuals with probable AD and non-demented controls. We observed a statistically significant increase of SM levels (24.3 ± 2.4%) in CSF from probable AD individuals vs. controls. Our findings indicate that SM levels in the CSF could potentially provide a new lead in AD biomarker research, and show the potential of the method for disease-associated CSF phospholipid screening.
The results presented in this paper suggests that portal bacteremia did not influence peripheral blood reactions. Furthermore, in the present study we have found a positive correlation between the smear and bacteremia of the superior mesenteric vein, but not with the bacteremia of systemic blood.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST: NONE DECLAREDAimThe aim of this study is to present differences of amplitude and latency of P300 wave between examinees with mild cognitive impairment and examinees from the control group.MethodsA cross-section study was performed between April 1st and July 10th 2012, with the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment as the main criterion for inclusion. In the twenty-two examinees who participated in the research, mild cognitive impairment was confirmed by neuropsychological testing, following which they were subjected to the examination of auditory evoked potentials. The control group consisting of 22 examinees, for which the lack of the same diagnosis was previously ascertained, was also subjected to the examination of auditory evoked potentials. The main findings were the differences in the latency and amplitude size of P300 wave targeted and non-targeted stimuli.ResultsThe latency of P300 wave targeted stimuli in patients with mild cognitive impairment has, in statistical terms, proven to be significantly longer when compared to the control group. The average latency length in those with MCI amounted to 306.18 ms, whereas the latency in the control group came to 295.95 ms. Similarly, the latency length of non-targeted stimuli turned out to be statistically higher, with the length of 320.00 ms in the former group, and 301.36 ms in the latter. Amplitudes in patients with mild cognitive impairment were lower in comparison to the control group, with extremely low amplitudes recorded in 36.36% of patients.ConclusionIn patients with mild cognitive impairment extended latency and lower amplitude of P300 wave are recorded.
The aim of this study was to determine the specificity and sensitivity of transcranial sonography (TCS) and the Pocket Smell Test (PST) in differing Parkinson's disease from essential tremor. The results were compared with the dopamin transporter scan (DaTSCAN) findings. Based on the DaTSCAN finding we formed a group of patients with essential tremor (51 patients) and a group with the Parkinson's disease (59 patients). The control group consisted of 26 healthy one. To evaluate the olfactory dysfunction the PST was used, whereas by TCS the substantia nigra hyperechogenicity was marked. The sensitivity and specificity of each diagnostic method was statistically calculated. In confirming Parkinson's disease the specificity of TCS was 88.2 % and the sensitivity 94.9 %. The specificity of PST was 80.4 % whereas the sensitivity was 74.6 %. TCS and PST should be performed to evaluate which patients need to be examined by DaTSCAN.
We describe a case of a patient with glossopharyngeal neuralgia (refractory to treatment with carbamazepine, amytriptyline, diazepam, and indomethacin) treated with lamotrigine as monotherapy, the first described, who responded completely to the therapy and did not complain of side effects. The complete analgesic effect was reached at the lamotrigine daily dose of 200 mg per day and was maintained at that dose for additional 6 months, with the blood concentration within the reference range.
Introduction:Parkinson’s disease (PD) is chronic progressive neurodegenerative disease. In patients with Parkinson’s disease among other symptoms occur cognitive dysfunctions, which can be shown by P300 wave changes.Aim:The aim of this study was to demonstrate that patients with Parkinson’s disease have reduced amplitude and prolonged latency, longer than 300 ± 10 ms.Material and Methods:The study included 21 patient suffering from Parkinson’s disease. After reviewing the medical records and analyzes the inclusion and exclusion criteria, patients were subjected to the same procedure examining auditory cognitive potentials (P300 wave) and the results were analyzed and compared to reference value for healthy population. Results:We have shown that patients with Parkinson’s disease have prolonged P300 targeted and frequent stimulus latency compared to reference value for healthy population. From 21 patient 18 had a pathological P300 target stimulus amplitude, and even 20 patients had pathological P300 frequent stimulus amplitude. Conclusion:People with Parkinson’s disease have altered P300 which indicates the presence of cognitive dysfunction in these patients.
Objective:Recording of event-related potentials by using oddball paradigm of auditory P300 has yielded conflicting results in migraine. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that migraine patients have reduced P300 amplitude and prolonged P300 latency, suggesting alterations of the cognitive-evaluative component. Methods:We recruited 29 migraine patients (24 females; median age 40 years) and 29 healthy age- and gender-matched participants. Participants were subjected to the same testing procedures of auditory P300 by discrimination the target auditory stimulus from the frequent stimulus, and analyzing P300 target/frequent stimulus amplitudes, and P300 target/frequent stimulus latencies. Results:Patients with migraine don’t have prolonged P300 target stimulus latency, but have a longer P300 frequent stimulus latency for 17.5ms. Out of 29 participants with migraine 8 had pathological P300 target stimulus amplitude, and 19 had pathological P300 frequent stimulus amplitude. Conclusion:People with migraine have altered the P300 which indicates the presence of cognitive dysfunction in these patients and importance of early diagnosis and intervention to preventing any deterioration in cognitive functions.
