The feeding and oviposition behavior of boll weevil in new cotton cultivars is essential for an adequate management. The objective of this study was to evaluate the vertical distribution of squares punctured for feeding and oviposition of the pest in the cultivars NuOPAL, DeltaOPAL, FMT-701, FMX-910 and FMX-993, and record the most and least preferred times of feeding and oviposition. The number of squares used for boll weevil feeding and oviposition were evaluated weekly in three parts of plant canopy. It was observed that, regardless the cultivar, A. grandis preferred to lay eggs in squares located in the upper part and feed on squares in the middle and upper parts. The boll weevil preferred to feed on cultivar FMT-701 in the beginning of the period of cotton flowering and fruiting, and the cultivars NuOPAL, DeltaOPAL, FMX-910 and FMX-993 throughout the whole period of flowering and fruiting. A. grandis preferred to lay eggs on cultivars NuOPAL, FMT-701 and FMX-993 at the beginning and end of flowering and fruiting of plants, while the cultivars DeltaOPAL and FMX-910 are used for oviposition throughout the period of flowering and fruiting.
ABSTRACT BIOLOGICAL ASPECTS AND FERTILITY LIFE TABLE OF APHIS GOSSYPII GLOVER (HEMIPTERA: APHIDIDAE) ON COTTON CULTIVARS DELTAOPAL AND NUOPAL.Genetically modified plants can affect the biology of non-targeted organisms, and change the tritrofic relations in the agro-ecosystem. Bt cotton cultivars have led to changes in the biology of Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), and have influenced the population dynamics of this insect in the field. The objective of the present study was to assess some biological parameters of A. gossypii in genetically modified cotton NuOPAL (Bollgard I) and DeltaOPAL cultivars. The experiment was carried out under controlled conditions, at 25 ± 1º C, 70 ± 10% relative humidity, and a 12-hour photophase. The experiment was installed in a completely randomized design, with DeltaOPAL and NuOPAL (Bollgard I) cultivars considered treatments, and 40 replications. Leaf circles of 6 cm in diameter were placed into Petri dishes containing 1% solidified agar-water, and nymphs of up to one-day-old were placed individually on these circles. The evaluations were carried out on a daily basis, and the biological parameters evaluated were: duration of each nymph stage and total phase, duration of reproductive and post-reproductive periods, total nymphs/females, and longevity. The parameters of the fertility life table were also assessed. The duration of nymph states and nymph stages, duration of reproductive and post-reproductive periods,...
The population of the caterpillar Diatraea saccharalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) has increased in the crop of sugarcane in recent years. Although the control of this insect is traditionally carried out through biological control, the use of phytosanitary products has still been necessary. Therefore, the goal of this work was to evaluate the performance of different insecticides in sugarcane borer control, as well as the effect on productivity and total recoverable sugar (TRS). The experiment was conducted in a randomized experimental delineation of blocks, with six treatments and four blocks. Treatments consisted of five insecticides and one control group (without application of insecticide). For calculating the D. saccharalis infestation index, monthly samplings were performed every 30 days, for 12 months. After this period, the final D. saccharalis infestation index was evaluated and calculated for each treatment. In order to compare productivity among procedures, four central lines were collected from each plot. Thus, the samples were weighed for the productivity calculation (TCH) and sent to the laboratory for the total recoverable sugar (TRS) analysis. The chloranthraniliprole (350) insecticide provided a lower index of sugarcane borer infestation, in addition to greater productivity when compared to the other insecticides. There was no significant difference in the parameter of total recoverable sugar (TRS) among treatments.
The natural parasitic behavior of parasitoids should be known by those in charge of planning strategies for the biological control of pests; therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine the larval instar of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner parasitized by Microcharops anticarsiae Gupta in the field and the implication of such parasitic behavior in the sex ratio in the laboratory environment. The length of each larval instar of A. gemmatalis parasitized by M. anticarsiae in the field was determined, and the egg-to-pupa period of the parasitoid and its larval instar lengths were plotted in Gantt charts. According to the chart, A. gemmatalis was parasitized at the first (15%) and second (85%) larval instars in the field, but the length of the first, second and third larval instars of this species was not affected by the parasitism by M. anticarsiae in the field; however, its fourth larval instar was extended and the fifth one was shortened in 2015 but not affected in 2016. The sex ratio of A. gemmatalis larvae parasitized by M. anticarsiae in the field was female-biased, and the sex ratio of early parasitized larvae (3-day old) in the laboratory environment was also female-biased for three cultivated generations. The ‘generation’ factor has affected the egg-to-pupa, pupal and egg-to-adult periods of M. anticarsiae, since females pupated earlier than males in the egg-to-pupa period. Based on the results, M. anticarsiae mostly parasitized the second larval instar of A. gemmatalis in the field, and parasitism in 3-day old larvae in the laboratory environment produced female-biased sex ratio in M. anticarsiae, regardless of the generation.
EFFECT OF COTTON OIL IN THE Zabrotes subfasciatus (COLEOPTERA:BRUCHIDAE) CONTROL IN BEAN SEEDS. ABSTRACTThe objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of cotton oil on the control of Z. subfasciatus in different bean seeds. For the experiment, three cultivars of beans: Campos Gerais, Gol 600 and Estilo were used, where all cultivars were submitted to treatment with oil containing one control of each cultivar. Petri dishes containing 250 g of seeds and 3 couples of the species Z. subfasciatus were used. The parameters evaluated were: number of eggs, adult emergence number, insect mortality, vigor, and seed germination. The treatments with cotton vegetal oil proved to be efficient in reducing the oviposition and the emergence of adults of the insect. In addition, the oil did not affect the physiological quality of the seed relative to the percentage of vigor and germination in the tested cultivars.
