-The knowledge of the dispersion pattern of the pests on a crop is fundamental for establishing an appropriated sequential sampling method. Also it permits the correct utilization of control strategies and optimization of sampling techniques. The objective of this research was to determine the spatial distribution of larvae of Alabama argillacea (Hübner) on cotton crop, CNPA ITA-90 cultivar. During the 1998/99 growing season a sampling system was applied in three experimental areas located at Itamarati Sul S.A. farm in the region of Ponta Porã, estate of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The areas measured 1 ha and contained 100 plots with 100 m 2 . In a weekly basis the number of small, medium and large larvae were counted on five plants per plot. The aggregation indexes (variance/ mean ratio and Morisita index), the chi-square test and the adjust of observed and expected values to theoretical distributions of frequencies (Poisson, positive binomial and negative binomial) showed that all stages of cotton leafworm larvae were distributed according to the contagious model, fitting the Negative Binomial Distribution during the whole period of infestation.
PALAVRAS-CHAVE:Zea mays, lagarta-do-cartucho, semivariograma, krigagem ABSTRACT -The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), is one of the chief pests of maize in the Americas. The study of its spatial distribution is fundamental for designing correct control strategies, improving sampling methods, determining actual and potential crop losses, and adopting precise agricultural techniques. In São Paulo state, Brazil, a maize fi eld was sampled at weekly intervals, from germination through harvest, for caterpillar densities, using quadrates. In each of 200 quadrates, 10 plants were sampled per week. Harvest weights were obtained in the fi eld for each quadrate, and ear diameters and lengths were also sampled (15 ears per quadrate) and used to estimate potential productivity of the quadrate. Geostatistical analyses of caterpillar densities showed greatest ranges for small caterpillars when semivariograms were adjusted for a spherical model that showed greatest fi t. As the caterpillars developed in the fi eld, their spatial distribution became increasingly random, as shown by a model adjusted to a straight line, indicating a lack of spatial dependence among samples. Harvest weight and ear length followed the spherical model, indicating the existence of spatial variability of the production parameters in the maize fi eld. Geostatistics shows promise for the application of precise methods in the inte...
The aim of this work was to study the life cycle of Cosmolaelaps jaboticabalensis Moreira, Klompen and Moraes preying on Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), a serious cosmopolitan pest of different crops, as well as on Protorhabditis sp. (Nematoda: Rhabditidae) and Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Astigmatina: Acaridae), prospective factitious foods for the mass rearing of the predator. Experiments were conducted in a chamber at 25 ± 1 °C, 70 ± 10 % RH and in the dark. Total immature development (egg-adult) was completed in 12.3 ± 5, 6.6 ± 0.6 and 7.1 ± 0.6 on F. occidentalis, Protorhabditis sp. and T. putrescentiae, respectively. Fecundity and intrinsic rate of increase were higher on Protorhabditis sp. (71.6 ± 9.1 eggs/female; 0.28 female/female/day) than on F. occidentalis (63.8 ± 14.8; 0.23) and T. putrescentiae (43.1 ± 8.9; 0.23). Cosmolaelaps jaboticabalensis reproduces by thelytokous parthenogenesis and its larval stages can be completed without feeding. Protonymphs and deutonymphs can survive in the absence of food for about a month, and adults for almost 2 months. It was concluded that C. jaboticabalensis is a promising biological control agent of F. occidentalis and that it may be mass reared with the use of Protorhabditis sp. or T. putrescentiae.
Soybean bugs are major crop pests that cause significant reduction in harvest yield and influence grain quality. The aim of this study was to verify the spatial distribution of Euschistus heros (F.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in conventional and transgenic soybean cultivars. The experiment was conducted during the 2010-2011 crop season in UNESP/FCAV, Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil, in two fields of 10,000-m(2) area that were subdivided into 100 plots (10 m × 10 m). The cultivars sown were M 7908 RR and its isoline M-SOY 8001. The number of the first to fifth instars and the number of adults were determined. To evaluate insect dispersion in the area, the following indices were used: variance/mean ratio, Morisita index, Green coefficient, and the k exponent of the negative binomial distribution. To study probabilistic models to describe the spatial distribution of the insects, the adjustments of the Poisson and negative binomial distributions were tested. The first to third instars showed aggregated spatial distribution, whereas the fourth and fifth instars, and adults, isolated or grouped, showed variation in the arrangement, ranging from moderately aggregated to randomly dispersed. During the adjustment of probability distributions, the negative binomial distribution model showed adjustment for the first to third instars, fourth and fifth instars, adults, and fourth and fifth instars plus adults.
-The spatial distribution of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) on corn is essential to perform control strategies, to improve sample technics, to estimate economic losses and incorporate spatial dynamics within population models. Experiments were carried out in three fields, each one composed of 100 plots, where 10 plants per plot were sampled at random, totalizing 1,000 plants per field in five sampling dates. The number of small caterpillars (shorter than 10 mm) and large ones (longer than 10 mm) per plant was counted. The negative binomial distribution model fitted well for small caterpillars, indicating that this larval stage is aggregated in these fields. For large caterpillars the model showed a moderate fit, and some dates adjusted well to the Poisson distribution. Thus, the small caterpillars (high populational density) show an aggregated distribution in the field, whereas the large ones (low populational density) could be more dispersed, tending to an at random distribution.
ABSTRACT CHARACTERIZATION OF THE COTTON VEIN MOSAIC VIRUS BY APHIS GOSSYPII TRANSMISSION WITH RELATION TO PERSISTENCE AND TIME NECESSARY FOR INOCULATIONIn cotton crops (Gossypium hirsutum L.), the aphid Aphis gossypii Glover, 1877 (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is a major sanitary factor due forts efficiency on transmission of cotton vein mosaic virus (CVMV). The objective of this work was to evaluate the persistence of CVMV on transmission by A. gossypii and to determine the necessary feeding period for inoculation. In the persistence assay, individual aphids wingless viruliferous were separately transferred daily to successive series of healthy plants. The necessary period for inoculation was determined in individual winged and wingless adults viruliferous that were confined in healthy plants for different periods (40 s, 45 min, 1.5 h, 3.0 h, 6.0 h, 12.0 h, 24.0 h and 48.0 h). In the persistence assay, 35% of total aphids transmitted the virus for more that five plants. Transmission for a maximum period of 12 days was verified after the acquisition, thus characterizing the relation virus-vector as persistent. The viruliferous wingless adults transmitted the virus from 1.50 h (5.0% of plants) and attain the maximum percentage in inoculation access period of the 24 h (75.0%). The viruliferous winged adults transmitted in all inoculation access periods, with maximum transmission in period of the 48 h (60.0%). The persistence mode of transmission of CVMV by aphid and the increased efficiency of t...
