Escolas. Identificação da violência. Violência sexual. AbstractStudies on sexual violence towards children and teenagers have demonstrated that family members and acquaintances are the most usual aggressors, which makes it all the more difficult to make accusations. During childhood and adolescence, the school setting might be the ideal place for detection, intervention, and promotion of features of protection to reduce violence and its impact upon their development. The aim of this paper was to analyze cases of sexual violence identified or revealed in educational settings, describing its forms, incidence, victim and aggressor profiles, as well as the individuals responsible for their identification. Twenty-two cases have been selected out of 2,522 records provided by a state accusation program that offers support to victims of sexual violence. The data also show that victims are mainly females under the age of 12. Teachers were largely responsible for revealing the cases, which were mainly verbally communicated by the victims.Uniterms: Child abuse. Schools. Identifying violence. Sexual abuse.
To take a cultural view of education does not really require constant cultural comparison. Rather, it requires that one consider education and school learning in their situated cultural context.(Jerome Bruner 1996, p. X)The research in educational psychology has often challenged the concept of educational context. According to the different theoretical frameworks, the construct of context, its borders, and the aspects to be taken into account have been defined in different ways. The objective of this book is to provide a context of discussion in order to rethink the relationship between actors, practices, and borders within the educational settings in the various currently thriving perspectives of cultural psychology (Valsiner 2014). The main idea is to focus on how teachers, parents, students, educators, and professionals, with their own identity and social representations, build their educational practices, share cultural spaces where knowledge is generated, and define the borders of the educational contexts (Marsico et al. 2013b). Scholars coming from different parts of the world contributed to this volume with their own perspective to depict educational processes as complex phenomena, taking place both inside and outside the educational setting, but also in between them. In this direction, the notion of educational context acquires different
The purpose of this paper is to verify how educators applying social/ educative measures, working with adolescents who have broken the law, evaluate the performance of the school in a community context of social/educative care regarding prevention and reduction of recidivism in breaking the law. Data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews, conducted within the institution and analyzed making use of the discourse of collective subject. The results, after interviews were analyzed, highlight four major themes: the similarities and differences between that specific school and the other public schools; the role of the school while enforcing the social/educative measure of confinement (SEMC) and its preventative actions; the recommendation of preventative actions; and the causes of recidivism. In the collective discourse of educators, one may note that school plays a key role in preventing and reducing recidivism of offenses. However, there is a lack of connections with the social work network outside the institution. Security issues are the major difference, identified by research participants, in relation to schools external to the institution. Family, socioeconomic and personal factors are, according to educators, risk factors for adolescents, which make it difficult to discontinue the legal offenses. The importance of adolescents being able to build their own life project and the inability to follow up with the ex-inmates are emphasized in the narrative of these professionals, which demonstrates the urgency of articulated public policies for a better service to young people when they leave the (Brazilian) social/educative system.
URBAN VIOLENCE: THE TEACHERS' ASSESSMENT ABOUT THE SCHOOL'S PERFORMANCE AbstractThe aim was to investigate how public and private school teachers describe and assess the school's performance concerning violence. It was also to identify the actions the school should have about it, according to these teachers. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, concerning several aspects of violence. In the teachers' answers, four categories of actions were identified: preventive, repairing, stimulating and null. The private school teachers showed a vision of school as basically preventive, whereas the public school ones conceived it as repairing or null. The most suggested actions by public school teachers included the participation of the family and the community. The influence of work contexts, different in both groups, guided the discussion of the results.Key words: Violence; teachers; school's performance.
