This paper explores some relationships between women and regional development. After a review of the two main approaches in regional studies in Québec, it presents the major findings of recent feminist research in international and regional development studies. It is argued that a sociological definition of « development » is needed in future research. Finally, the authors discuss their own conceptual framework for an empirical study of women's grassroots development experiments in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region
The withdrawal of the State in the field of health services rises important questions in our society. Tasks of care and support done in the natural environment, particularly within families, are basically taken on by women, for these tasks are an extension of domestic activities. Empirical data from a research in the Saguenay area help authors to demonstrate how the transfer of a portion of the responsabilities of health care from State to natural environment may contribute to strenghten the mothering role of female caregivers and stress isolation and absence from the public sphere. The valorization that women can get from caregiving is supported by justification systems and symbols. From a typology developed by Paul Ricceur, the authors prove that caution must be applied towards these systems, for they can generate individualism and asymetrical relationship between the female caregiver and the person cared for
Following a research funded by SSHRC, the article gives account of the impacts of the creation of four Health and Social Services Centres (CSSS) on relationships with community organizations and social economy enterprises in Loss of Autonomy Linked to Ageing Program. The study demonstrates that the advent of larger structures and the mobility of managerial staff, often from hospital, do not favour as familiar relationships as those experienced in Local Community Services Centers (CLSC) and still found in the smallest studied CSSS. Clinical Framework and Local Services Networks are shaped according to an integrated services logic unfit for community specificities. Well-founded or not, but acknowledged by HSSC managers, community organizations are clearly alarmed to be caught in a logic of harmonization and standardization for services provision, even where CSSS directions have so far managed to keep local features into account
