Abstract:The possession of religious institutions was a key-factor in the construction and development of aristocratic power during the Early Middle Ages. The aim of this article is to study the proprietary churches owned by the Leonese aristocracy during the 10th century, in order to measure the role they played in the expansion and articulation of aristocratic estates, the imposition of seigneurial rights over peasant populations and the development of family wealth through generations.
