L'édition Lafuma sépare les deux fragments Laf. 44 et 45. L'édition Brunschvicg dissocie les deux fragments Br. 82 et Br. 83. Une note indique : « Ce fragment suit immédiatement dans le manuscrit le fragment qui le précède. Pascal est amené par le cours de son développement à des conclusions importantes qu'il se proposait de mieux mettre en lumière, en faisant le début de son chapitre. La transposition pourrait être faite, comme le demande M. Michaut, mais dans une restauration de l'Apologie, non dans une édition des fragments posthumes. » Le fragment Br. 83 commence comme suit par la mention marginale en italique : « Il faut commencer par là le chapitre des puissances trompeuses. » L'homme n'est qu'un sujet plein d'erreur, naturelle et ineffaçable sans la grâce. Rien ne lui montre la vérité. Tout l'abuse. Ces deux principes de vérité, la raison et les sens, outre qu'ils manquent chacun de sincérité, s'abusent réciproquement l'un l'autre ; les sens abusent la raison par de fausses apparences. Et cette même piperie qu'ils apportent à l'âme, ils la reçoivent d'elle à leur tour ; elle s'en revanche. Les passions de l'âme les troublent et leur font des impressions fausses. Le désordre est moindre que chez Montaigne. L'ordre des exemples est quelconque en apparence, mais cet enchaînement est construit par renchérissement systématique. Comparer avec Sel. 94. Le premier paragraphe forme un ensemble. L'édition de Port-Royal change quelquefois dans ce texte imagination en opinion mais ce n'est pas toujours le cas : on trouve les termes imagination et imaginaire. C'est cette partie dominante dans l'hommeDominante est la lecture des deux Copies, ainsi que de Tourneur, Lafuma, Anzieu, Steinmann, Sellier et Le Guern. La déception que ressentirent les proches de Pascal à la découverte des fragments auxquels la postérité donne le nom de Pensées est connue : ces notes griffonnées, raturées et inachevées parurent d’abord tout à fait impropres à la publication, du moins selon le témoignage d’Étienne Périer, neveu de l’écrivain. L’on se résolut cependant à en faire un livre, et c’est au cours du travail d’édition que s’éleva entre la famille du défunt et le cercle de ses amis ce que j’appellerai ici une «querelle de l’autorité » , laquelle prit une tournure fort paradoxale. Le clan familial estimait en effet les fragments retrouvés tout à fait indignes de leur vénéré défunt, et pourtant, il exigea qu’ils fussent publiés dans l’état de leur découverte. L’autre camp, dans lequel on comptait le duc de Roannez, mais aussi Antoine Arnauld et Pierre Nicole, jugea le texte avec beaucoup plus d’indulgence, voire d’enthousiasme, mais pensa absolument nécessaire de le réviser considérablement, sans redouter pour autant de mettre en péril la figure auctoriale. Je m’emploie, dans cet article, à éclairer tant les manifestations que les raisons de ce clivage, qui compliqua sérieusement la confection des Pensées de M. Pascal sur la religion, et sur quelques autres sujets.
