Résumé.A travers cette communication, nous rendons compte des principaux résultats d'une étude reposant sur l'analyse linguistique de productions narratives orales d'une quarantaine d'élèves scolarisés, âgés de 3 ans à 6 ans, recueillis sur une même année scolaire. L'originalité de cette recherche repose sur une analyse simultanée, pour un même corpus, de la structuration du récit et des indicateurs linguistiques retenus. L'objectif est de comparer les compétences discursives des élèves, en fonction de deux variables : l'âge et le milieu socioculturel, lors d'une tâche commune à tous les élèves (« raconter l'histoire du Petit Chaperon Rouge en s'appuyant sur l'histoire qui vient d'être lue et sur les images»). Les compétences visées par notre étude sont la structure narrative et ses étapes, les connecteurs et les indicateurs de complexité utilisés par les élèves. Nous avons croisé ces données en les combinant entre elles et en les comparant en fonction des deux variables citées. Ce sont ces outils-là, leur présence ou leur absence, leur combinaison ou leur indépendance, que nous observons. Outre l'analyse linguistique du corpus, notre objectif est aussi didactique en ce qu'il vise à questionner la dimension didactique de la production du récit oral sur cette période d'apprentissage stratégique pour la maîtrise du langage oral. A travers cette recherche, nous répondrons aux questions suivantes : Comment est élaborée la structure narrative ? Les élèves issus de milieux socioculturels plus défavorisés ont-ils plus de difficulté à produire un récit que les élèves issus de milieux socioculturels favorisés ou bien n'y-a-t-il pas d'écart significatif ? Repère-t-on des différences entre les procédés linguistiques utilisés par les deux groupes d'élèves ? Notre étude revient sur certains des points abordés par d'autres chercheurs et apporte des éléments nouveaux de réflexion sur l'organisation du récit oral chez de jeunes enfants, éléments qui ouvrent des pistes en didactique.Abstract. Our study is founded on the linguistic analysis of oral narrative productions of forty students enrolled, ages 3 to 6 years old, collected from the same school year. The originality of this research is based on a simultaneous analysis, for the same corpus, in one first step, on narrative organization and tools of language, and in second step, on the comparison of students performance based on their sociocultural background. D'une phrase essentiellement « graphique » à la phrase « syntaxique »Nous reviendrons tout d'abord sur le problème de définition que pose, chez certains linguistes (par exemple, Béguelin, 2000 ; Berrendonner, 2002), la notion de « phrase », soumise à des critères hétérogènes, de ce fait parfois contradictoires. Les instructions officielles pour l'école (B.O., 2008) témoignent de cette difficulté qui se matérialise aussi dans les manuels scolaires.Si le concept traditionnel de « phrase » est inopérant pour décrire l'oral (Blanche-Benveniste, 2002), il l'est aussi pour décrire l'écrit comme nous l'avons déjà montré sur des textes d'élèves d'école élémentaire (Cappeau & Roubaud, 2005 ; Paolacci & Rossi-Gensane, 2012 ; Paolacci & Rossi-Gensane, 2014). Nous proposons ainsi de recourir à une phrase redéfinie à partir d'un critère relationnel (Feuillard, 1989 ; Paolacci & Rossi-Gensane, 2012). À la suite, notamment, de Chevallard (1985 : 39), il est pertinent de distinguer entre, d'une part, savoirs qualifiés infra de « théoriques » et, d'autre part, « savoirs à enseigner », dans la mesure où « Un contenu de savoir ayant été désigné comme savoir à enseigner subit […] un ensemble de transformations adaptatives qui vont le rendre apte à prendre sa place parmi les objets d'enseignement ». Les savoirs relatifs à la phrase mis en texte dans les programmes et les manuels seront présentés avant les « savoirs théoriques » qui se caractérisent par une grande divergence. La phrase et des « savoirs à enseigner » fondés sur des critères divers En 2008Dans le programme du CP et du CE1 relevant alors du cycle des apprentissages fondamentaux (B.O., 2008 : 17), il est conféré à la phrase un rôle central et premier, puisque « La première étude de la grammaire concerne la phrase simple ». Les manuels en prennent généralement acte en plaçant la phrase dans les premières leçons de la partie grammaire. L'île aux mots CE2 (2008 [2014]), où « Identifier les phrases déclaratives et interrogatives » est l'avant-dernier chapitre de grammaire, ne constitue une exception qu'en apparence car la phrase est évoquée dès le premier chapitre « À quoi sert la grammaire ? ».Comme il apparaît explicitement dans les progressions pour le CP (B.O., 2008 : 31), la phrase est tout d'abord définie par un critère typographique : il s'agit, à ce niveau de classe, d'« identifier les phrases d'un texte en s'appuyant sur la ponctuation (point et majuscule) ».Le critère selon lequel une phrase est comprise entre une majuscule et un signe de ponctuation forte est également toujours indiqué dans les manuels de CE2, de CM1 et de CM2, même s'il ne l'est pas nécessairement en première place.
