En dépit de la réunification il y a près d'une génération, les traces du partage demeurent sensibles dans l'espace berlinois. Cet article interroge les modalités vernaculaires et quotidiennes d'actualisation de ce passé. Il analyse les processus concrets par lesquels les acteurs ordinaires effacent certaines formes urbaines héritées ou au contraire en réinstituent d'autres. Le concept de « frontière fantôme » permet ici d'articuler trois temporalités : la temporalité physique et sociale de la ville, construite et reconstruite sur elle-même, la temporalité des imaginaires continuellement réévalués qui donnent sens à l'espace urbain, la temporalité de l'expérience des habitants et passants qui pratiquent la ville.
Le réaménagement de la place du château à Berlin révèle la façon dont certains acteurs politiques et associatifs participent d’une « renationalisation » du discours sur les spécificités urbaines locales. La requalification de cet espace central a supposé l’éviction du palais de la République, édifice emblématique de Berlin-Est érigé en 1976 en lieu et place du château des Hohenzollern et qui fonctionna pendant près de 14 ans jusqu’à ce que les événements de 1989 remettent en question son existence. En 2002, le Bundestag vota sa destruction et la reconstruction de l’ancien château municipal. Nous verrons tout d’abord en quoi la création d’un objet patrimonial par voie de clonage architectural vise à combler l’espace urbain de fictions se rapportant aux identités locales. Nous montrerons ensuite comment certains acteurs contestèrent ces récits sur les identités urbaines. Il s’agira enfin d’explorer les effets exclusifs de la destruction du palais de la République.
