RESUMOO emprego das plantas medicinais para o tratamento de enfermidades é uma prática tão antiga quanto a espécie humana. A utilização dessas plantas ocorre não somente em áreas rurais como também em áreas urbanas e por grande parte da população mundial. O conhecimento popular, passado de geração em geração, é ponto de partida para pesquisas visando o desenvolvimento de novos medicamentos. A etnobotânica contribui nesse contexto, pois também estuda a relação entre o uso das plantas medicinais e o homem. O presente estudo objetivou realizar levantamento do conhecimento local sobre Varronia curassavica Jacq., conhecida popularmente como erva-baleeira, por meio de um formulário aplicado às agentes da Pastoral da Saúde, Regional Sul 4, no sul do estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil. Foram entrevistadas 10 agentes que detinham conhecimento de uso com a erva-baleeira. Várias indicações de uso foram relatadas pelas agentes, sendo as mais frequentes dores musculares, hematomas, contusões, artrite, reumatismo e artrose. Em comparação com os estudos encontrados, vários ratificam seu potencial como anti-inflamatório tópico, indicação validada pela Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (ANVISA). INTRODUÇÃOAs civilizações mais antigas, de todas as culturas, utilizavam seus conhecimentos populares para desenvolver seus próprios sistemas terapêuticos e, até hoje, muitas pessoas ainda têm como única opção a medicina popular (OLIVEIRA et al., 2011;SHARMA et al., 2012) . Assim entra a fitoterapia caracterizando-se pelo tratamento de doenças com uso de plantas medicinais e suas diferentes formas farmacêuticas sem a utilização de seus princípios isolados (FIRMO et al., 2011).
O uso de plantas medicinais tem evoluído ao longo do tempo e é crescente o interesse das indústrias farmacêuticas pelas plantas e seus compostos. O trabalho teve como objetivo realizar estudo etnobotânico sobre Cuphea carthagenensis (Jacq.) J. Macbr. (Lythraceae), conhecida como “sete-sangrias”, utilizada pela Pastoral da Saúde, por meio da realização de 10 entrevistas semiestruturadas, com aplicação de um formulário abordando aspectos botânicos, agronômicos e farmacológicos. Dentre as formas farmacêuticas mais utilizadas destacam-se o infuso e a alcoolatura, indicadas principalmente para combater triglicerídeos, circulação e pressão alta. Estudos científicos demonstraram que a planta apresentou resultados para colesterol, hipertensão, diurética, antioxidante e vasorrelaxante. Evidencia-se a importância de estudos que resgatem o conhecimento de plantas medicinais de uso regional em áreas em constantes formações, como as cidades, para que este saber não se perca.
