RESUMOO emprego das plantas medicinais para o tratamento de enfermidades é uma prática tão antiga quanto a espécie humana. A utilização dessas plantas ocorre não somente em áreas rurais como também em áreas urbanas e por grande parte da população mundial. O conhecimento popular, passado de geração em geração, é ponto de partida para pesquisas visando o desenvolvimento de novos medicamentos. A etnobotânica contribui nesse contexto, pois também estuda a relação entre o uso das plantas medicinais e o homem. O presente estudo objetivou realizar levantamento do conhecimento local sobre Varronia curassavica Jacq., conhecida popularmente como erva-baleeira, por meio de um formulário aplicado às agentes da Pastoral da Saúde, Regional Sul 4, no sul do estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil. Foram entrevistadas 10 agentes que detinham conhecimento de uso com a erva-baleeira. Várias indicações de uso foram relatadas pelas agentes, sendo as mais frequentes dores musculares, hematomas, contusões, artrite, reumatismo e artrose. Em comparação com os estudos encontrados, vários ratificam seu potencial como anti-inflamatório tópico, indicação validada pela Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (ANVISA). Considerando que Pelargonium sidoides DC. é usado tradicionalmente na África do Sul e na Alemanha para infecção das vias respiratórias, incluindo sinusite e tuberculose, além de apresentar baixo potencial de efeitos adversos, tanto para adultos como para crianças, objetivou-se realizar um levantamento bibliográfico observando as publicações disponíveis nas bases Google Acadêmico, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), Portal CAPES, PUBMED, MEDLINE, publicadas nos últimos 20 anos sobre os aspectos etnobotânicos, taxonômicos, ecológicos, fitoquímicos, farmacológicos e toxicológicos da espécie, na perspectiva de fornecer informações para sua utilização segura e racional.
