Foods rich in antioxidants play an essential role in the prevention of diseases. The present study compared contents of phenolics, vitamin C, anthocyanin and antioxidant activity of 11 fresh exotic fruits, cultivated in the northeastern part of Brazil. The antioxidant activities were evaluated using two antioxidant systems 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), expressed as TEAC (Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity) and VCEAC (Vitamin C Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity) values. The results indicated that the above fruits, such as murici and mangaba, were good sources of antioxidants. The phenolic contents showed positive correlations with total antioxidant by ABTS (R = 0.94, P ≤ 0.001) and DPPH (R = 0.88, P ≤ 0.001) assays. However, this correlation was not noticed when examining vitamin C and anthocyanins contents. The 11 fruits studied had comparable antioxidant activity in both, ABTS and DPPH assays. These methods are recommended as useful tools for the evaluation of the total activity antioxidant in fruits. Our results indicated promising perspectives for the development and usage of fruits species studied with considerable levels of antioxidant activity.
A importância da inclusão de minerais na dieta têm sido amplamente discutida em textos sobre nutrição AbstractBrazil has great importance in the fruits market; however, data on the composition of Brazilian tropical fruits, mainly of those produced in the Northeast region, is scarce. In the present study, it was determined the macro-and micro-minerals of 11 tropical fruits cultivated in the Northeast of Brazil: pineapple, sweetsop, soursop, jackfruit, papaya, mangaba, murici, sapodilla, ciruela, tamarind, and umbu. The samples were dehydrated and mineralized in HNO 3 /HClO 4 (3:1) solution. The minerals Ca, Mg, Mn, Zn, Fe, Co, Se and Ni were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry; Na and K by flame photometry; and P by the colorimetric method. The results indicated that tamarind is a rich source of all minerals available, especially of Mg, Cu and K, in addition to being a good source of Ca, P, Fe, and Se. Among the minerals evaluated in this study, K presented the highest content, followed by Ca and Mg. Sweetsop, soursop, sapodilla, and murici are good sources of two or more minerals. High correlations were obtained between K and the minerals P, Co, and Fe and between Co and Fe. Therefore, the consumption of the studied tropical fruits is suggested as an assistant to the reposition of mineral nutrients.

Postharvest quality of hydroponic lettuce in greenhouse shaded with thermo-reflective and black screensQuality characteristics of leafy vegetables are affected by the duration of exposure, quality and intensity of light. This study was carried out under greenhouse conditions to evaluate the postharvest quality of hydroponic lettuce affect by thermo-reflective screens with different percentages of attenuation of solar radiation. The experiment was arranged in a 2 x 5 factorial randomized block design, with three replicates and treatments consisting of four thermoreflective screens ( 40; 50; 60 and 70% of attenuation of solar radiation) and one control with the black screen 50%. Lettuce (cv. Olinda, Crespa) plants grown in each experimental plot, represented by an individual hydroponic system, were evaluated for quality at harvest and after four days of cold storage (7.6 ± 1 ºC and 27 ± 5% UR). The over-shading caused by thermo-reflective 60 and 70% and black screen 50% affected the lettuce appearance. The plants shaded with thermo-reflective 40% showed lower mass loss after four days of storage. The shading provided by the thermoreflective and black screens did not affect the acid content, soluble solids, vitamin C and chlorophyll content of lettuce.Key words: Lactuca sativa L., mesh shading, soilless culture, storage.
