The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), E. coli O157, Salmonella, and Listeria monocytogenes in retail food samples from Seattle, Wash. A total of 2,050 samples of ground beef (1,750 samples), mushrooms (100 samples), and sprouts (200 samples) were collected over a 12-month period and analyzed for the presence of these pathogens. PCR assays, followed by culture confirmation were used to determine the presence or absence of each organism. Of the 1,750 ground beef samples analyzed, 61 (3.5%) were positive for EHEC, and 20 (1.1%) of these were positive for E. coli O157. Salmonella was present in 67 (3.8%) of the 1,750 ground beef samples. Of 512 ground beef samples analyzed, 18 (3.5%) were positive for L. monocytogenes. EHEC was found in 12 (6.0%) of the 200 sprout samples, and 3 (1.5%) of these yielded E. coli O157. Of the 200 total sprout samples, 14 (7.0%) were positive for Salmonella and none were positive for L. monocytogenes. Among the 100 mushroom samples, 4 (4.0%) were positive for EHEC but none of these 4 samples were positive for E. coli O157. Salmonella was detected in 5 (5.0%) of the mushroom samples, and L. monocytogenes was found in 1 (1.0%) of the samples.
This essay reflects upon the milieu and the character of Brazilian and Argentinean natural history museums during the second half of the nineteenth century. It argues that the museums were influenced not only by European and North American museums but by each other. Museum directors in the two countries knew each other and interacted. Some of the relationships between these museums were friendly and cooperative, but because they were in young, emerging nations, they also became deeply involved in the invention of nationality in their respective countries and interacted as rivals and competitors. Even through rivalry, however, they contributed to each other's development, as did rivalry among museums within each of the two countries. Later in the century they went well beyond the nationalist perspective, finding, through their research into paleontology and anthropology in their regions, a continental and uniquely South American scientific perspective, defined in reaction to North American and European views.
This thesis analyses the trajectory of the Imperial Instituto Fluminense de Agricultura (IIFA), a private institution founded by State officials, landowners and 'men of sciences'. The Institute's main goal was to improve agricultural production in Braz l, through changes in farming practices, adoption of new equipment and the introduction of scientific principles into the rural activities. The men of sciences linked to IIFA aimed at the 'ideal of progress of civ lized countries' and took as their 'mission' to convince farmers to adopt a science-based agriculture. IIFA was constituted by: the Jardim Botânico [Botanical Garden] da Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, which besides being a leisure area was also responsible for the production of seedling and seeds in large scale to be distributed to farmers; the Fazenda Normal, a farm with the purpose of serving as grounds to the practice of technical and scientific experimentation; and the Asilo Agrícola [Agricultural Asylum], a foster home that sheltered orphans from the Santa Casa da Misericórdia and taught them reading, writing and the profession of farming. IIFA issued the Revista Agricola [Agricultural Journal] consistently for 22 years. The three-monthly magazine aimed at spreading farmingrelated themes, with a view to improving and raising agricultural production. The thesis shows that the Institute served as a locus for institutionalizing the scientific fields related to Agriculture in Brazil, such as Agricultural Chemistry, Forestry, Pedology, Agricultural Meteorology, Phytopatology and Animal Husbandry, to the point they could conquer their own spaces.
The museums gathered huge amounts of collections of surveys of territories and people, always proposed as comprehensive, ultimate and exhaustive endeavors, which made those institutions face the challenges of not only storing and displayng the collections and specimens but also how to order the latter in archives and catalogues that would make them intelligible. Problematizing issues already present in the nowadays consistent literature, including the Latin-American contribution, on museums, the paper discusses among other themes, the acritical identification between museums and the representation of nations and the recurrent notion of museums as place of memory. It proposes as a challenge to the new generation of scholar to ponder how to write these histories incorporating their human and non-human agents as well as the set of events and circunstances that generated their sucesses and failures.
