To evaluate the prevalence of anterior open bite and to investi gate its associati on to non-nutriti ve sucking habits, breast-feeding, mouth breathing and family income, among children aged 3 to 5 years att ending public day care centers in a city of the Brazilian Northeast. Method: One-hundred and seventeen children with complete primary denti ti on were examined and their mothers underwent a structured interview in order to gather informati on on pediatric oral habits. Any negati ve value was considered as an anterior open bite. The collected data were entered in the SPSS 13.0 soft ware and presented on conti ngence tables. The chisquare test was used to verify associati ons among the variables, with p<0.05. Results: It was observed that 54.7% of the children presented object-biti ng habit, 49.6% used pacifi ers, 9.4% presented thumb sucking habit, 47.9% used nursing bott les and 23.1% presented tooth grinding. Anterior open bite was prevalent in 36.8% of the children and it had a stati sti cally signifi cant associati on with the male gender (p=0.038), mouth breathing (p=0.007), and use of nursing bott les (p=0.040) and pacifi ers (p=0.0001). Conclusion: Oral health promoti on policies may be implemented for the populati on with emphasis on breast feeding, especially up to 6 months of age, special att enti on to the use of pacifi ers and nursing bott les, observing ti me of usage and hygiene, as well as early identi fi cati on of anterior open bites for ti mely adopti on of preventi on and/or correcti on.
bjective: This study investigated whether some components of the extracellular matrix and CD68 expression may drive the differences between the central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) of the jaws and giant cell tumor (GCT) of long bones, which present distinct evolution and clinical behavior. Material and Methods: Eight cases of CGCG and 7 cases of GCT were selected and immunohistochemically analyzed to verify the pattern of expression of CD68, tenascin (Tn) and fibronectin (Fn). Results: A large number of the mononuclear cells and multinucleated giant cells CD68+ was observed in both of the studied lesions, indicating histiocyte/ macrophage origin. Seven cases of CGCG of the jaws showed intense staining of Fn, with uniform distribution predominantly. In all 7 cases of GCT of long bones the Fn displayed intense expression, with distribution pattern varying from uniform to reticulate/fibrillar. Six cases of CGCG were intensively stained by Tn, presenting focal expression in half of specimens, and reticulate/ fibrillar pattern of expression in 4 cases. All cases of GCT of the long bones presented intense expression of Tn, uniform distribution, and reticulate/fibrillar pattern of expression in four cases. Conclusions: The immunoexpression of CD68 in mononuclear cells and multinucleated giant cells and staining patterns of Fn and Tn were similar in both entities. These findings indicate that these proteins could not be used to explain the differences between the CGCG of the jaws and GCT of the long bones.
Lipoma. Neoplasia.
The Linguistic Atlas of Paraiba (ALPB), published in 1984, is the result of the work of a group of Professors of the Department of Vernacular and Classical Letters from the Federal University of Paraíba, coordinated by Professor Maria do Soccorro Silva de Aragão. For the organization of the point network of ALPB, 25 "towns-base" were chosen with, in addition, three satellite localities for each, for a total of 100 towns of the homogeneous micro-regions, with similar physical, social and economic features, which cover the entire State. The satellite towns served for control and validation of data collected in our "towns-base" and are not included therefore on the cards. The questionnaire was divided into two parts: a general part, with 289 data and a portion with 588 specialized data. The ALPB was published in two volumes. Volume 1 contains the lexical and phonetic maps and the Volume 2 an introduction with reference to the work history and the methodological approach used, a quick analysis of forms and linguistic structures identified, a glossary and a bibliography. The Linguistic Atlas of Paraíba was the third Linguistic Atlas published in Brazil after the Atlas Prévio dos Falares Baianos (1963) and the Esboço de um Atlas Linguistico de Minas Gerais (1977).
