Anatomical and morphophysiological leaf blade traits of Panicum maximum genotypesAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate anatomical and morphophysiological traits of the leaf blade of Panicum maximum genotypes, and to determine which ones favor an early discrimination of promising genotypes for nutritive value. The experiment was carried out in Dourados, MS, Brazil, between January 2006 and November 2007. Twenty-three P. maximum genotypes, which were pre-selected from the Embrapa Gado de Corte breeding program, were evaluated. The experimental design was a randomized block, with three replicates. Twenty-seven anatomical and morphophysiological leaf blade traits were evaluated in each genotype. For each trait, the results were grouped by the Scott-Knott test. The relative contribution of the traits to genetic divergence was determined by the Singh method. The traits that best discriminated the genotypes were the proportion -in the leaf blade cross-sections -of upper, lower, and upper + lower epidermis, and of mesofile and vascular bundles + sclerenchyma. Specific leaf area, leaf area, and leaf blade length were the morphophysiological traits that showed higher contribution to genotype discrimination; however, their relative importance was much lower than that of the anatomical traits. The proportion of parenchymatic bundle sheath cells and blade width show phenotypic instability.Index terms: Aruana grass, Massai grass, Milênio grass, Mombaça grass, Tanzânia grass, tissue proportion.
High-fat diet and feedlot performance of bullocks of different genetic groupsAbstract -This work aimed to evaluate the feedlot performance of bullocks of four distinct genetic groups receiving diets with different levels of fat. Nine Nelore; nine Caracu; ten ½ Caracu ¼ Angus ¼ Nelore and ten ½ Red Angus ¼ Caracu ¼ Nelore bullocks, with a mean initial weight of 227±33 kg and ten months of age, were randomly assigned to two nutritional treatments and fed either with low-fat (3.15% ether extract) or high-fat diet (7.28% ether extract). Dry matter intake (DMI) was quantifi ed during 208 days and the animals were weighed every 28 days. Animals fed with the high-fat and the low-fat diet presented similar results for average daily weight gain (1.511x1.487 kg day -1, respectively) and feed effi ciency (194x180 g gain per kg DMI, respectively); the DMI, expressed as live weight percentage, was lower in animals receiving high-fat diet (2.25x2.40, respectively). Crossbred animals presented greater daily weight gain and DMI than Nelore. The high-fat diet can be used in feedlot to improve the performance of ½ Caracu ¼ Angus ¼ Nelore bullocks, since it is effi cient in reducing the DMI without compromising weight gain.
Palavras-chave: digestibilidade aparente, forragem de baixa qualidade, ingestão, nitrogênio não-protéico Intake and digestibility of palisade grass hay by beef cattle supplemented with a mixture containing ammonium sulphate, casein and urea ABSTRACT -The intake and digestibilility of the nutrients of diets containing palisade grass (Brachiaria brizantha cv.MG4) hay of low quality and different protein levels were evaluated. The evaluated treatments were control (only hay) and hay with crescent addition, by rumen infusion, of the mixture containing ammonium sulphate, casein end urea (0.5:1.0:4.5) in way to elevate in +2, +4, +6 and +8% the CP level in the diets. A Latin square experimental design with five levels supplementation, five animals and five periods was used. The addition of crescent levels of no protein nitrogen (NPN) to the diet showed a quadratic effect on the dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and ether extract (EE) intake, and the biggest intake was observed with level of 10.5% CP. No effect of CP levels were observed for on the DM, OM, NDF and EE digestibilities coefficients. There was crescent linear effect on CP apparent digestibility coefficient, that showed values of 57.4, 66.9, 73.6, 77.3 and 81.7% for the CP levels of 6.3, 8.5, 10.5, 12.6 and 14.8%, respectively. The critical point and estimated maximum response were: 10.5% CP and 7.7 kg DM/day and 7.2 kg OM/day. The supplementation with nitrogenous compounds in amounts that permit to elevate the dietary protein level up to 10.5% of CP increases the use of low-quality forage.Key Words: apparent digestibili...
Palavras-chave: ácidos graxos voláteis, nitrogênio amoniacal, novilhos, pH Effect of yeast culture supplementation on ruminal fermentation of beef cattleABSTRACT -This study evaluated the effects of the inclusion of a yeast culture (Saccharomyces cerevisiae 1026) on the parameters of ruminal fermentation of beef cattle. Ten rumen fistulated 1/2 Red Angus 1/2 Nellore steers confined in individual pens were fed a diet containing 50% sorghum silage and 50% concentrate (%DM) containing peleted soybean hulls, sorghum grain, urea and mineralproteic premix. A completely randomized design was used to compare diets with or without Saccharomyces cerevisiae (1 g/100 kg of live weight) on two of the four daily meal. Ruminal pH, ruminal concentrations of ammoniacal nitrogen (N-NH 3 ), acetate, propionate, butyrate, total volatile fatty acid (VFA) and acetate:propionate ratio values were not influenced by the supplementation of yeast culture. There were interaction between sampling time and treatments for pH, and molar concentrations of acetate and propionate. Ruminal pH, ruminal concentrations of acetate, propionate, total VFA and acetate:propionate ratio showed a quadratic response related to collection time. In diets with 50:50 forage to concentrate ratio, the supplementation of yeast culture did not influence the ruminal fermentative parameters.
This study aimed to evaluate the growth of body components in crossbred ewe lambs fed increasing levels of dietary concentrate and to determine the optimum level of supplementation for finishing ewe production. Thirty crossbred (½ Pantaneira × ½ Texel) wool ewe lambs fed Tifton 85 hay (Cynodon spp.) and different dietary concentrate levels (20, 40, 60, and 80% DM basis) were selected for study. At the beginning of the study, six animals were slaughtered for determination of initial body composition. The remaining animals were slaughtered at approximately 48 kg live weight. The growth of body components in relation to body growth was estimated from the allometric model BC = a × (FBW) b , where BC is body component weight, a and b are growth equation parameters, and FBW is fasted body weight. Carcass, muscle, bone, and gastrointestinal tract were late maturing (b <1, P <0.01). Carcass and carcass fat growth was positively affected (linear, P <0.05) by concentrate level. Total fat weight increased with increasing concentrate level (P <0.05). The addition of up to 60% concentrate in growing ewe lamb diets is recommended for production of carcasses with early deposition of muscle and fat. The addition of 20% concentrate in ewe lab diets is sufficient for production of carcasses with maximum deposition of muscle and no excess fat. Key words: Allometric coefficient. Body composition.
The aim of the current study is to assess three integrated systems presenting different eucalyptus tree densities due to animal and forage production. The following integrated systems were assessed: croplivestock-forest with 357 eucalyptus trees ha -1 (ICLF1); crop-livestock-forest with 227 eucalyptus trees ha -1 (ICLF2); and crop-livestock with 5 remnant native trees ha -1 (ICL). The randomized block experimental design was applied in a split-plot scheme with four replicates. The Average Daily Gain (ADG, g animal -1 day -1 ) and the live-weight gain per area (LWG, kg ha -1 ) were applied to analyze animal performance, which was set by weighing the animals every 28 days (the animals previously fasted for 16h). Forage yield was higher in ICL during fall and winter; in summer, it did not differ from ICLF2. There was no forage yield difference between the ICL and ICLF2 systems in any of the assessed seasons; summer was more productive in ILPF1 than other seasons. The highest leaf crude protein contents (CP) in summer was recorded in systems ICLF1 and ICLF2, and the highest value recorded in fall was found in ILPF1; the lowest was found in ILP. On the other hand, the highest leaf NDF contents in summer were found in ILP. The highest ADG were found in summer. The highest LWG values recorded for the ICL and ICLF2 systems were collected in summer and fall; there was no difference in any of the three systems in winter. The LWG was higher in all system in summer. The ICLF2 emerged as the system (with trees) most appropriate for beef cattle production. Despite the shading interference on forage production, such condition is compensated by the best nutritional contents such as CP. The ICLF2 system allowing an annual LWG of 83% in relation to the ICL system during the fifth year of establishment of the systems. Key words: Piatã grass. Tree density. Eucalyptus.
