A survey of Eimeria infections was performed in dairy goats and kids (<6 months old) of six farms from a dry desert area of Gran Canaria Island (Spain). The number of oocysts per gram of faeces (OPG) was determined by a modified McMaster technique over a total of 2,616 individual faecal samples taken from the rectum in monthly intervals. Eimeria oocysts were found in 96.1% of the samples with OPG ranging from 1 x 10(2) to 1.4 x 10(6). Kid goats had significantly (P < 0.001) higher OPG counts (46,496 +/- 5,228) than dairy females (2,225 +/- 287). Eight Eimeria species were identified, with Eimeria ninakohlyakimovae (30.0%), Eimeria arloingi (28.6%) and Eimeria alijevi (20.5%) being the most frequent species followed by Eimeria caprina (9.1%), Eimeria christenseni (4.5%), Eimeria jolchijevi (3.4%), Eimeria caprovina (3.2%) and Eimeria hirci (0.7%). Although significant differences were observed among goat groups and herds, the eight species were present in the six farms in both dairy goats and kids. The intensity of oocysts shedding was related to some factors such as the size of the herd and was further influenced by the prevailing climatic conditions of the area. The highest OPG counts were recorded during the hot season in dairy goats and close to weaning time in kids reared in small farms having no prophylactic treatments against eimeriosis.
No cv. ABSTRACT-Three cultivars of Panicum maximum Jacq. under rotational grazing were evaluated for one year, before and after grazing, when measurements were made of the availability of total dry matter, height, residual dry matter, forage density, leaf dry matter, participation of leaves, stems and dead material, and ratios of leaf:stem and leaf:dead plant material. The treatments were 1) v. Tanzania + 50 kg N/ha, 2) v. Tanzania + 100 kg N/ha, 3) v. Mombaça + 50 kg N/ha, and 4) v. Massai + 50 kg N/ha. The Mombaça cultivar presented the poorest results, lowest production of leaves and the highest proportion of stems. However, the cv. Massai deservers attention for characteristics such as higher density of DM and higher leaf lamina:stem ratio; however, it presented a lower ratio of leaves:dead material. There were no significant differences in percentage of leaves among the cultivars. In the cv. Tanzania, nitrogen fertilization at the end of the rainy period had beneficial effects only in March when there was an increase in the leaf:stem and leaf:dead plant material ratios. The residual dry matter correlated positively with the height of the forage. The animals grazed 41% of the height of the pasture in the dry period, and 47% in the rainy period.
Palavras-chave: composição química, pastejo rotativo, seletividade, taxa de lotação Evaluation of Three Varieties of Panicum maximum Jacq. under Grazing: Diet Composition, Dry Matter Intake and Animal Weight GainABSTRACT -Three varieties of Panicum maximum Jacq. were evaluated by measuring the botanical and chemical composition of the diet, and the dry matter intake and weight gain of the animal under rotational grazing, before and after a period of grazing. The treatments were: 1) v. Tanzânia + 50 kg N/ha, 2) v. Tanzânia + 100 kg N/ha, 3) v. Mombaça + 50 kg N/ha, and 4) v. Massai + 50 kg N/ha. Of the diets selected by the animals, v. Massai tended to show lower values for digestibility and crude protein, and higher values for neutral detergent fiber; however, in general, the diets containing v. Mombaça had higher values for silica. The animals selected an average of 92.4% green leaves, independent of treatment and season of sampling. The animals consumed similar quantities of forage on the diverse treatments, with average intakes of 1.9, 2.8, 3.4, and 2.3 kg DM/100 kg BW, respectively, for June, September and November of 1998 and March of 1999. Low weight gains of the animals on v. Massai were verified, but due to the higher availability of forage during the rainy season, the weight gains per hectare were higher than for v. Mombaça + 50 kg N/ha and v. Tanzânia+ 50 kg N/ha. Factors which had the most positive influence on weight gain of the animals were quantity of leaves, height of the pasture, crude protein content of the diet selected by the animals, and size of the bite.
Entre os componentes do comportamento ingestivo observou-se apenas correlação negativa entre tempo de pastejo e tamanho de bocados (r = -0,45).Palavras-chave: tamanho de bocados, taxa de bocados, tempo de pastejo Evaluation of Three Varieties of Panicum maximum Jacq. under Grazing: CattleIngestive Behaviour ABSTRACT -Three varieties of Panicum maximum Jacq. were evaluated by measuring ingestive behavior components (bite size, grazing time, and rate of eating) for one year under rotational grazing. The treatments were: 1) v. Tanzânia + 50 kg N/ha, 2) v. Tanzânia + 100 kg N/ha, 3) v. Mombaça + 50 kg N/ha, and 4) v. Massai + 50 kg N/ha. The values for bite size were probably overestimated, even so, values lower than 300 g DM/bite size were observed, a critical consideration, in the dry period. There was a tendency for smaller size bites with v. Massai during the dry period, probably due to distribution of leaves and dead material present in the pasture. There were no differences in time of pasturing among treatments and between seasons of evaluation, but the standard of distribution for time spent grazing along with the day was modified by the different seasons. Few differences in rate of eating were observed among the varieties. The rate of eating tended to increase with the length of time in the plots. Among the components of ingestive behavior the only significant correlation observed was between time of pasturing and bite size (r = -0.45).
The objective of this paper was to perform a microclimate evaluation and determine the indexes of thermal comfort indexes, in sun and shade, in integrated crop-livestock-forest systems with different arrangements of eucalyptus and native trees, in the Brazilian Midwest. The experiment was conducted at Embrapa Beef Cattle in Campo Grande, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, from July to September 2013. The evaluations were conducted on four consecutive days, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., local time (GMT -4:00), with 1 hour intervals, recording the microclimate parameters: air temperature (°C), black globe temperature (°C), wet bulb temperature (°C), relative humidity (%), and wind speed (m.s), for the subsequent calculation of the Temperature and Humidity Index, the Black Globe Temperature and Humidity Index, and the Radiant Thermal Load. The largest changes in microclimate parameters were found in the full sun, between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m., in less dense eucalyptus system, followed by the scattered native trees system, resulting in a maximum Temperature and Humidity Index of 81, Black Globe Temperature and Humidity Index of 88 and Radiant Thermal Load of 794 W m. Therefore, it is observed that with the presence of trees in pastures were possible reductions of up to 3.7 % in Temperature and Humidity Index, 10.2 % in the Black Globe Temperature and Humidity Index, and 28.3 % of the Radiant Thermal Load in the shade. Thus, one can conclude that the presence of trees and their arrangement in the systems provide better microclimate conditions and animal thermal comfort in pastures.
