La quete d'une langue originelle et universelle se double a la Renaissance d'un remarquable interet pour la diversite des langues et pour la capacity, qui oppose l'homme aux animaux, d'apprendre et de pratiquer des langues etrangeres. Seduite par la polyglossie, la Renaissance est pareillement charmee par les mythes qui, de pres ou de loin, s'y rapportent: de Babel a la Pentecote pour l'histoire biblique, 1 a Mithridate pour l'histoire payenne. 2 Ce cote philosophique/philologique du probleme trouve d'ailleurs un moyen irremplaçable d'expression et de diffusion dans le monde, jeune et enthousiaste, de l'edition du XVIe siecle. Je fais allusion au phenomene tout a fait considerable des ouvrages/recueils lexicographiques plurilingues qui foisonnent dans l'Europe entiere a partir du debut du siecle. Cette immense moisson, composee de centaines de (re-)editions, comprend des ouvrages plus connus -les celebres "Calepin" plurilingues derives du lexique latin-grec d'Ambrogio Calepio paru a Reggio Emilia en 1502 3 -, a cote de dictionnaires moins connus mais tout aussi repandus, tels le "Solenissimo/ Utilissimo Vochabuolista" ou le "Berlaimont". C'est a propos de ces derniers, que Ton a pu definir "dictionnaires pratiques" vis-a-vis des "dictionnaires savants" tels justement le Calepin, le Nomenclator, le Decimator, que je voudrais presenter quelques considerations. 4 L'histoire du "Solenissimo Vochabuolista" se rattache a la tradition des manuels de conversation et des glossaires du Moyen Age, déjà repandus avant l'introductioi'. de l'imprimerie, et qui juxtaposaient deux ou plusieurs langues vulgaires. La premiere edition imprimee de cette longue serie remonte a 1477; parue a Venise sous le titre de "Introito e Porta", elle Lingvisticoe Investigationes 16:2 (1992), 395-420.
