O Grupo de estudos de Ciência do sistema Terra constitui esforço de pesquisa, experimentação e reflexão sobre como adaptar o currículo do Ensino Médio brasileiro perseguindo eixos curriculares vinculados aos estudos da Terra. A maior parte das escolas brasileiras de educação básica não inclui no currículo componente curricular voltado para o estudo do conhecimento da Terra e do ambiente a seus estudantes. Dentro destes limites, tempo geológico tornou-se eixo capaz de articular disciplinas comuns da escola, ou seja, estudar a Terra e seus fenômenos permite construir ligações, p.ex. entre Biologia e Geografia (disciplinas comuns do Ensino Médio). Os procedimentos seguem orientações de pesquisa colaborativa que entrelaça pesquisadores de distintas universidades e professores da rede pública. Os principais resultados se concentram em inovações curriculares que enfatizam concepção mais realista e integrada de dinâmicas ambientais. O objetivo deste estudo é revelar como professores da educação básica descrevem a contribuição das Ciências da Terra para sua formação e quais são as implicações para o currículo do Ensino Médio.
Experiências locais de gestão do Aqüífero Guarani e trabalhos desenvolvidos com estudantes no município de Ribeirão Preto (SP) visam enfrentar os desafios relacionados à melhor compreensão da qualidade e da quantidade de água desse mega-reservatório. Ribeirão Preto é uma área-piloto para estudo detalhado do Aqüífero Guarani, em função do acelerado crescimento urbano e da intensificação das atividades agrícolas e industriais. A demanda crescente de retirada de água subterrânea do Aqüífero Guarani tem levado um comitê gestor internacional a empreender dois tipos de ações: (a) para promover capacitação local junto a diferentes atores da comunidade local, como pode ser considerado o trabalho desenvolvido pela disciplina de Matemática “Aqüífero Guarani: ecologia e ciclo da água” na Escola Estadual Profª Eugênia Vilhena de Moraes, resultado de reflexões conduzidas para a inovação da prática na mudança do currículo escolar e (b) ações para promover gestão local e ordenamento territorial do espaço hídrico subterrâneo em conjunto com instituições envolvidas na execução das diversas tarefas de avaliação e conhecimento das características do reservatório; um exemplo disso é não permitir, na zona central da cidade, novas perfurações de poços, a não ser para substituição de poços do abastecimento público.
