In the article the results of theoretical research of the problem of forming a tolerant attitude towards people with special educational needs (SEN) are substantiated, defining the essence of the basic concepts of the research, psychological approaches to understanding the content and levels of tolerance. The following research methods were used: study of psychological and pedagogical literature, media monitoring, questionnaires and mathematical statistics. The results of an empirical study involving 226 respondents representing general secondary and higher education institutions in different regions of Ukraine are presented. The cases of disability discrimination in inclusive education were identified and the most effective measures for the formation of tolerant social attitude towards them were outlined. Based on the analysis of media resources, examples of intolerance in inclusion in different countries of the world are given, as well as dominant gender, racial or socio-cultural stereotypes that serve as barriers to inclusion. The emphasis is placed on the need to create an inclusive educational environment where all students can feel psychological comfort, understanding and mutual respect based on the generally accepted principle of tolerance – all students should study at regular educational institutions, despite difficulties or differences between them. The necessity for proper conditions for effective educational or correctional and developmental work with people with SEN, taking into account the adaptive nature of people from socially vulnerable groups, as well as mental, gender, ethnocultural characteristics of society has been proved.
Upbringing, public education and university education as sources of Polish independence. Kazimierz Twardowski's pedagogical and patriotic ideas and activities] S u m m a r y : When considering Polish thought and pedagogical activity in the years 1863-1914/1918 in terms of a relationship between education and aspirations to independence, one ought to pay particular attention to the thought and pedagogical activity of Kazimierz Twardowski (b. 1866. in Vienna, d. 1938 in Lwow). He created a philosophical-logical Lwow-Warsaw School, which focused not only on research-including scientific work in the field of pedagogy-but also on the practical elements of bona fide educational practices. Tadeusz Kotarbinski, among others, was convinced of the educational value of Kazimierz Twardowski's achievements. In 1965 he characterized the legacy of his teacher as follows: "The effort of Twardowski's thought was (...) coupled with concern about its bright and clear expression-the task of the thinker is one with the task of the teacher. By his own example the professor taught how to think, how to co-think along with others, how to co-inquire, (...) simply put, he taught how to work". Twardowski was involved in organizing Polish educational efforts: he chaired a committee of the General Academic Lectures, the Girls' Middle School Society, and the Society of Teachers of Higher Education. Among Twardowski's public lectures, it is worth paying particular attention to his lecture entitled "Upbringing and humanities" that inaugurated the Holiday University Courses in Cieszyn, which were organized by the Polish Association of Pedagogy in the Duchy of Cieszyn (15-30 August, 1904). Twardowski's interesting correspondence with associations operating in Cieszyn have also been preserved. In the pedagogical activity of Twardowski there are civic and patriotic themes. He attached great importance to the fulfillment of one's obligations towards one's country, a sentiment that he expressed in public speeches and that was aimed at nurturing citizenship and patriotism. Wypracowując koncepcję pedagogiki międzykulturowej i koncepcję "międzykulturowej tożsamości", Jerzy Nikitorowicz rozpatruje doświadczenie zakorzenienia w tradycji i postawę "człowieka pogranicza" (otwartego na odmienności kulturowe). Zmierzając do dojrzałych teoretycznie ujęć problematyki Innego, pogranicza i relacji międzykulturowych, Nikitorowicz postuluje rewitalizację heterologii (nauki i wiedzy o Innym). Słowa kluczowe: zakorzenienie, dziedzictwo tradycji, otwartość, pogranicza, pedagogika międzykulturowa, "międzykulturowa tożsamość" Człowiekowi trudno żyć w izolacji i naturalną jego potrzebą jest konieczność zakorzenienia się, zadomowienia, zagospodarowania i oswojenia przestrzeni życia.
