This study aims to identify the main barriers to product innovation in small and medium technology based companies in Brazil. The innovation process and its obstacles are analyzed, by interviewing several agents involved in the process, including entrepreneurs, venture capital investors, and managers of business incubators. The analyses compare two points of view, from the entrepreneurs and investors. As main findings, we found: (i) difficulties concerning legal barriers, costs and availability of capital; (ii) the lack of investors for advanced steps of the development and scarcity of exit modes, raising the investment cycles compared to international averages; (iii) the investors participation close to the entrepreneurs in the business management; (iv) the difficulty to find technical and management qualified professionals to engage in new and uncertain businesses; (v) cultural aversion to risks, inducing both the entrepreneurs as the investors to be more conservative in the decision making, and (vi) sense of good perspectives for tthe future, tied to the capital availability. As contributions, this research allows to understand the scenario where innovative entrepreneurship happens, as well as the issues that slow down or cause failure in the process. Understanding these issues is the first step to address them systematically. Entrepreneurs that have this information can plan ahead and take measures to accelerate innovation in their businesses. Investors that are willing to support early stage businesses, and knowing the obstacles in this environment, will provide them with better chances to act and mitigate risks of failure in their investments portfolio.
Due to the limitation of resources, the need to foster the developments and the lack of some competencies internally, companies are forced to cooperate with external agents, like other companies and universities, as suggested by the Open Innovation paradigm. Although there are lots of studies dealing with partner selection factors in alliances in the firm level, few studies are devoted to understand the specific demands of the task, in the project level, considered it the theoretical gap to be addressed in this study. The paper analyzes the partner selection factors in bilateral alliances projects, accordingly to the type of the partner and the type of innovation project. The data come from the case study in one Brazilian petrochemical company, analyzing in-depth 20 alliances projects with different partnerscompetitors, customers, suppliers, universities; and embodying different innovativeness degree-incremental innovation, platforms, breakthrough and basic science. Founded on the resources based view background, it was possible to identify the more prevalent selecting factors and alliances characteristics depending on the partner type and project type. The theoretical background jointly with the qualitative evidences enabled the building of theoretical propositions to be tested in future quantitative researches.
This study aims to evaluate the orientation towards sustainability for a company's innovation project, grounded in three aspects: the importance of the triple bottom line dimensions; the stakeholders' engagement; and the nature of competencies necessary to this innovation. In order to do achieve our objective, we have gathered data from a case study of the green plastic project in Braskem, the biggest chemical company in Brazil and in America, and one of the biggest biopolymer producers worldwide. Thus, the study addresses the following propositions: P1: Sustainability-oriented innovation must have also environmental and social criteria, besides economic criteria; P2: Sustainability-oriented innovation has multiple stakeholders-related criteria selection, besides own company shareholders; and P3: Sustainability-oriented innovation projects demand major presence of competencies if compared to traditional ones. The main results show the prevalence of environmental indicators over others, the very importance of the value chain and knowledge as a basis for sustainabilityoriented innovation. Keywords: Sustainability; Innovation; Green Plastic.
