ABSTRACTIn this paper we show that it is possible to extend the use of quasi-Monte Carlo for applications of high effective dimension. This is achieved through a combination of a careful construction of the Sobol sequence and an appropriately chosen decomposition of a covariance matrix. The effectiveness of this procedure is demonstrated as we price average options with nominal dimensions ranging up to 550 (effective dimension around 300). We believe the method we present is easy to implement and should be of great interest to practitioners.
This article reports a study on the performance of mutual equity funds in Brazil from January 2002 to August 2012. For the analyses, Carhart's four-factor model is used as the benchmark for performance, and bootstrap procedures are applied to separate skill from luck. The results show that returns of the best performers are more due to luck than skill of their managers. For the bottom ranked funds, on the contrary, there is statistical evidence that their poor performance is caused mainly by bad management, rather than by bad luck. It is also showed that the largest funds perform better than the small or middle-sized funds.

This article develops a real option model with uncertain and sequential investment and with time to build. The model includes options to entry and to exit the activity and addresses the maximization problem of a company in view of the investment opportunity. The differential equation of the asset is obtained by using dynamic programming and risk neutral evaluation. Particularly, for the construction period, the differential equation is partial and elliptical, which demands the use of numeric methods. The main results of the article are that (i) with uncertain and sequential investment and with time to build, the waiting value, which creates a gap between the investment decision rule based on NPV and that based on a real option model, may not very significant and (ii) the increase in uncertainty may anticipate the decision to investment.
This paper estimates the parameters of a pricing model which considers the possibility of discrete jumps in the Brazilian exchange rate (Merton's model), from January 1997 to January 1999. Those parameters can be seen as probabilities and expected magnitudes of real devaluation. Such estimates are defended as good measures of credibility of the exchange rate policy that prevailed from March 1995 to January 1999, and it is argued that the possibility of discrete jumps explains the existence of volatility smiles for Brazilian exchange rate options during that period. According to the results presented by this paper, the magnitude of the discrete jump occurred in January 1999 was underestimated by the market and the credibility of the exchange rate policy was mainly affected by crises in other developing countries
