Abstract:The multiple and balanced use of water resources has become a difficult task, since the implementation and continuous improvement of management systems still fail to keep abreast of the constant changes occurring in the environment due to human activities. Water planning and management on a river basin scale requires the use of computational tools that allow for joint modeling of water quantity and quality. This study involved an assessment of the self-cleaning ability of the middle and lower courses of the Uberaba River, located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This river is extremely important because its waters supply a population of approximately 322 500 distributed among the municipalities of Uberaba, Veríssimo and Conceição das Alagoas. The water quality parameters of dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, organic nitrogen, ammonia, nitrate and total phosphorus were modeled for the period of October 2012 to September 2013, using the AQUATOOL system. The constants of biochemical reactions were calibrated by the trial and error method. The sensitivity analysis of the initially calibrated constants K a , K d , KN oa and KN ai and of the quality parameters of the intermediate inputs did not reveal significant variations in water quality. In the analysis of pollution scenarios, considering the critical flow Q 7,10 , it was found that organic nitrogen, ammonia and nitrate remained within the levels established by Minas Gerais (2008) and Brazil (2005). The concentration of dissolved oxygen would have to increase by 156% when compared with the value of the driest month only in the intermediate input that comprises the entire urban area of the city of Uberaba, whose urban streams receive domestic and industrial effluents. On the other hand, the parameters BOD 5 and P total were the most problematic, with high values in almost all the intermediate inputs, except for the Jataí and Preguiça streams, whose subbasins have minor areas of contribution. This indicates that, in addition to the pollutant loads from the urban area of Uberaba, the use of 70.6% of the total land area of the Uberaba River subbasin for agricultural and pastureland purposes contribute to the high concentrations of BOD 5 and P total .
Abstract. Despite considerable technical and algorithmic developments related to the fields of medical image acquisition and processing in the past decade, the devices used for visualization of medical images have undergone rather minor changes. As anatomical information is typically shown on monitors provided by a radiological work station, the physician has to mentally transfer internal structures shown on the screen to the patient. In this work, we present a new approach to on-patient visualization of 3D medical images, which combines the concept of augmented reality (AR) with an intuitive interaction scheme. The method requires mounting a Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera to a portable display (e.g., a tablet PC). During the visualization process, the pose of the camera and thus the viewing direction of the user is continuously determined with a surface matching algorithm. By moving the device along the body of the patient, the physician gets the impression of being able to look directly into the human body. The concept can be used for intervention planning, anatomy teaching and various other applications that require intuitive visualization of 3D data.
The See Color is a color coding system based on Braille writing to communicate colors to people with visual impairments. This study assessed the perception of the theme Temperature by blind people, by using the See Color code on two isarithmic tactile maps and the perception of subjects with normal color vision. An average temperature map of Australia had 10 classes, but these intervals were regrouped into four classes on Corel Draw software. The new map was duplicated in the digital project in A4 size, both included the See Color code in two color schemes obtained from the Color Brewer website. Subsequently, they were laser-printed on swell paper to produce the tactile relief. The chromatic perception was observed, as well as the thermal sensations that the colors could represent for blind participants (06), normally sighted participants in basic education (23), and normally sighted participants in higher education (20). In this research, the See Color code showed the potential to provide spatial knowledge as a graphic language through colors in color maps for adventitiously blind and for normally sighted participants based on their perception of colors and tactile color codes.
The application of nonimmersive virtual reality (VR) to the creation of rich cartographic representations in 3D is a current research area in cartography. However, the cartographic knowledge needed to build these representations is lacking. The consequences of this include misconceptions in map design that can inhibit or even impair understanding of the representation. A common task in cartographic VR is virtual navigation supported by 3D topographic maps. This geographical task gathers different knowledge schema, based on the selection of specific features for use as landmarks. In VR, there is a need for adaptation of cartographic representations to improve cartographic communication. The strategy adopted in this research uses Gestalt aspects to direct the user's selective attention to features that will act as landmarks. To evaluate this proposition, we compare sketch maps from 3D and conventional 2D topographic maps made by 43 volunteers and identify which features were used as landmarks and how they were drawn in the sketch maps. The number of landmarks identified by the user, their topology and orientation, and how the symbols were drawn highlights the success of this proposal for 3D topographic maps for virtual navigation.
