ABSTRACT-Brazilian guava (Psidium guineense Swartz.) is a plant species native from Brazil and present in all Brazilian biomes. This species occurs in the Caatinga biome as a wild fruit that has broad utility and can generate income, as well as provide material for breeding. The objective of this work was to study seed germination of guava accessions collected in two municipalities in Bahia. Seeds imbibition curve was studied. Also, seed germination and seedlings initial growth were evaluated for 44 days on different temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C), fruit maturation, drying, pre-soaking and priming. Seeds imbibition curve was triphasic in which lag-phase begun after 30 hours imbibition and lasted 256 hours. An effect of guava genotype was observed in seeds physiological quality. Temperatures of 20 and 25 °C were ideal for guava seeds germination. Seeds pre-soaking and priming techniques are feasible to reduce germination time and increase seedling performance.Index terms: genetic resources, Myrtaceae, vigor.
The Brazilian guava (Psidium guineense Swartz) is seed-propagated and, being native to the Caatinga biome, may frequently have uneven germination. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the synchronization of the in vitro seed germination of three accessions of the Brazilian guava, using water, polyethyleneglycol (PEG 6000), and potassium nitrate (KNO3) at different potentials and times of osmotic priming. Seeds from three accessions of the Brazilian guava (Y85, Y93,and Y97) from the UNEB/BA Germplasm Active Bank were subjected to the following pretreatments: -0.6, -1.0, -1.4, and -1,8 MPa PEG 6000; 10 and 20% KNO3 for 24h; 10 and 20% KNO3 for 48h; water for 24 and 48h; and non-primed seeds as the control. The experimental design was therefore a 10x3+1 factorial scheme. We assessed the germination percentage (G), mean germination time (MGT), germination speed (GS), and germination speed index (GSI). Data was subjected to analysis of variance followed by a means test (Duncan at 5% probability) and regression. There was interaction between the priming treatments and accessions for all evaluated features, except G. PEG 6000 decreased the MGT (from 6 to 8 days) and increased GS and GSI of seeds from all three accessions at potentials -1.0 to -1.5 MPa.Water-priming had a positive effect on MGT, GS, and GSI of accession Y85 seeds. KNO3 negatively affected germination of seeds from all three accessions. Thereby, we could synchronize seed germination of accessions Y85 and Y97 with PEG 6000.
Crotalaria ochroleuca (Fabaceae) is rich in bioactive compounds used for nematode control. Transformed root culture allows the production of a large amount of hairy root biomass, conditioned by auxin biosynthesis-related genes integrated via the process of Agrobacterium rhizogenes infection, which is known to cause a hairy root phenotype. We transformed A. rhizogenes to increase the biomass of hairy roots and optimized the process of production of bioactive compounds. The transformed nature of hairy roots was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction, which confers kanamycin resistance. The transformed roots were cultured in full-strength in liquid media to realize the growth of hairy roots and the production of bioactive compounds. The transformed roots were grown in a culture medium supplemented with elicitors to produce total phenols, and flavonoids. Chromatographic analysis of transformed roots revealed the presence of flavonoids apigenin-6,8-C-diglucoside and luteolin-6-C-glucoside. The results were obtained by conducting physiological and biochemical studies with the flavonoids and studying the pathways that led to the production of large amounts of bioactive compounds from the hairy roots of C. ochroleuca. It was observed that the extraction of the compounds significantly affected nematodes and insect larvae, resulting in significantly high levels of economic damage to crops.

Golden THB. GOLDEN THB ABSTRACT: The use of residues for the production of papaya seedlings can mention an accessible solution to the producing areas. Therefore, the objective was to evaluate the influence of portions of 0 to 60% of tannery sludge in a mixture with a commercial substrate, traditionally used in papaya propagation, to evaluate the emergence, biometric, gravimetric and quality characteristics of papaya seedlings. cv. Golden THB. The emergence characteristics had a similar performance between the proposed and commercial substrates. Overall, there were significant differences between treatments with more than 15% tannery sludge and the commercial substrate. Except for the percentage of emergence, significant results were found for regression, with the answer being the indication that gradually with the increase in the portion of the tannery sludge to the commercial substrate, there was a reduction in the characteristics analyzed. Possibly, the effects of high salinity provided this response pattern, in addition to the nutritional imbalance as a result. Despite the good results of the emergence characteristics, in general, the mixture of tannery sludge to the commercial substrate limited the development and quality of papaya seedlings cv. Golden THB, for use only in proportions up to 15% of sludge. Keywords: propagation, alternative waste, sustainability, cost reduction, Carica papaya.
